Nobody in MY area (Los Angeles, CA and surrounding counties) uses DMR, NXDN, and such. I don’t care about listening to those ham repeaters that do, but no police, fire or EMS agency I listen to uses them, or is planning to.

The operative words there were, "I think I'll wait." I'm sure I'll get one but my present stock of scanners words just fine for me right now. For reasons I can't explain, the simulcast public safety DMR system here hasn't been a problem.

If I want to listen to ham radio, I'll turn on my Yeasu and maybe even talk to them.

I'm waiting for more videos to be posted. I saw a new one today listening to the Ohio system but it had so much sun glare in the background you couldn't really see much. With today's smartphone it's pretty fool proof to make a clean and simple video.

Note: video has been removed from YouTube.

If programming is being done now on Seninel and future upgrades are coming to sentinel, does that mean that I can swap Cards between the SDS and 436? Or use the same programming info for my 436 for the new SDS and just add screen customization? I have many hours in the 436 and would hate to redo it all. If I am super excited about the SDS and hope to be able to purchase soon!

It's either going to use the same x36 Sentinel or another version. Even if it's a different version, you should be able to swap back and forth using the HPE export/import just like you can do with the x36 Sentinel and the HP-x Sentinel. Just like the HP-x Sentinel won't recognize certain things such as Alert Light colors, the x36 Sentinel (if different) will not know screen colors. Also use the latest one and import 'backwards' to make sure no settings are lost.

Rafael R836 Tuner

Perfect! exactly the tuner we need, now how will it correct PPM and drift when the unit warms up? Is it automatically accomplished?

That would be the job of the ATCXO.

Last week I asked Upman specifically about not having to do a bunch of file conversions when using Favorites Lists created for the x36's in the new scanner. He left me thinking exporting won't be needed, thankfully.

I suspect some (or more) folks will be like me - get a new handheld and still hang on to the 436 and 536s. So it will be very important for files to go back and forth with no extra step in between.

That has nothing to do with the tuner, and everything to do with the reference oscillator circuit connected to it. I suspect Uniden's will do better than ±50PPM.

How much are the royalties? I could understand passing on that cost but cmon. A scanner does not cost much to make. Unit cost is probably less than $100 per scanner. So $100 from $699 that's $599 profit. Isn't that enough?

A $599 profit is enough if the free market dictates such.

Correct. And I will add that people who don't understand how business actually works should not be making comments about how much something costs to make versus the "profit" earned from its sale, lest they look like a buffoon.

Perhaps in the future they will upload just the audio so you're not distracted by the sunlight or shiny objects in the background.

Not sure where the $100 came from. Parts costs more than that. Add royalties. Add production labor. Add engineering cost. Add sales and marketing cost. Then, realize that we sell at wholesale (which is less than $599), not for full retail 98% of the time. I would like to hire you if you can pull $599 profit out of that.

You forgot shipping, taxes and duties, warranty repair costs, and a few other things. All of which add even more to the per-unit cost...

Don’t forget that the SDS100 is also supposed to have superior decode on weak digital signals.

In addition, if it does have an RSSI read-out I may be able to finally use my 8 element 800 MHz Wilson beam to find the best direction to point it in. At present, it takes such a small signal to give five bars of signal strength on my 436hp that this has proven difficult.

Plus packaging, accessories, and shipping not only from the factory to Uniden, but from Uniden to the distributor, and from them to the dealer. and packing boxes and supplies on all those steps.

Then add overhead of the facilities (sales, repair, warehouse). Wages for all involved, too.

Now, forget about MSRP because you will never get that. That is profit left on the table because there are marketing forces at work.

You have to love how people think there is no cost involved except for the parts, and things always sell for MSRP.

UPMan and those with test units will this radio show Radio IDs when monitoring a conventional Digital channel with out the need for a Single Frequency Trunked System? It truly is a useful feature on the other brands radios. Always having to program a coventional channel in its own system is a bit hard when on the road. I hope this will display conventional channel data correctly. I have been hopong to see the Unidens display the Radio ID on convetional channels for some time now.

Thanks for your time,
Bob
