Uniden has to pay a royalty for DMR, NXDN, & ProVoice upgrades for each scanner upgraded, not a single royalty for each owner of one or more units being upgraded.

How does that work, do they pay royalties on every scanner made because they have the technology in them, activating a key is just turning a switch on. That would mean Uniden takes a hit if someone buys a scanner and never pays for the key (or the cost is high enough to cover the ones not turned on). Or does it work on a trust, Uniden says we turned on this many scanners and then they get billed?

Uniden pays royalties on keys sold. Key sales are audited by the patent holders or their designated representatives.

If the scanner is not upgraded, no royalties are due.

Hey @Jonwienke - I think you need to come up with some GPS antenna for this that is RECHARGEABLE puck. So one cable to this radio. And on the battery pack attached to the puck (a plug in of USB style) that we can charge it night before a trip.

That way we don't have to canibalize the tight inside and I don't have to have cords a dangling except 1 going to the radio from the puck.

I will buy the first one !!!

A single 14500 Li-ion battery would power a GPS for 24-30 hours. It wouldn't be that hard to rig up a box that had a battery or three, charging plug, power switch, and GPS with the appropriate cable to plug into the scanner. I could build one today with the stuff in my spare parts bin if you're serious.

Maybe put magnets on the bottom to hold it in place?

I encourage you to think smaller, and thus, a shorter time period. If you can modify a stock GPS puck to house a small battery and give it 8-10 hours of run time, that would satisfy most users, I bet. No additional housings, etc.

Magnets for ... where? If for the proposed charging "tabs", probably non-magnetic.

Think smaller here as well, single AAA cell, attach with Velcro, add a USB port so could use like an OTH cable and then able to use external USB powerpacks(for the SDS, not the GPS).

Magnets to stick the GPS box to the dashboard or whatever, in similar fashion to the Uniden puck.

And if you're assuming the use of a USB battery pack, you could run both the scanner and GPS off the battey pack, and use the factory puck with different ends on the cable.

We're getting wayyy off topic here, but, I'm going to ask anyway. About the jack/connector Uniden uses for the GPS puck, is it just 4 conductors and a shield? Does the puck use all 4 conductors for data?

Yes.

Does the puck use all 4 conductors for data?

No. If the GPS has its own power supply, all that's used is one data line and ground. The NMEA serial data protocol used by all Uniden scanners (including the SDS100) does not require or expect any acknowlegment or response from the device receiving the data.

Uniden makes GREAT products - I have quite a few of them! However, $699 PLUS the paid upgrades?? Wow, that's pretty steep! :O

That "recommended" price is exactly $100 more than the price Uniden shows for the BCD436HP on their web page. I assume Uniden marketing believes that the color display, improved simulcast reception and water resistance are "worth" approximately $100 more to the end user.

Now that is cool, will it be available on the final product or is it only for demo/testing purposes?

NOISE was originally just for engineering testing, but we found it useful during beta testing so are keeping it in for release.

Sorry if I missed this, but is there an anticipated release date?

Just need to know when to sell my 436 :)
