So, next month I am going to get an SDS100 to complement my TRX-1. From what I've read most folks use a case, so I'll grab some of those as well. I know Sentinel is what must be used for updates, etc. but are others programming their SDS with different software?

ProScan is the only other software worth considering. It has a 30-day free trial at ProScan.org.

Any of them will work. I like the nylon case, but others like the leather.

Proscan, 30 Day trial not 14 - just 1 version that does many different HPE scanners not just one, built in web server remote control and it’s cheaper.
Everyman to his own.

I have been using both Sentinel and Proscan although I am still learning the scanner. Sentinel seems to be easier to program from the database. Proscan has similar programming characteristics but I haven't fully learned SDS100 Proscan programming yet. I have done some basic non-database programming.
Proscan does give better scanner control over sentinel. Also with proscan after programming the scanner it will revert back to a USB from mass storage mode.
This is going to be a personal choice on which to use. I'm using both for now. Use both and choose what work best for you.

I don't use a case and haven't missed it. The SDS100 runs a bit warm and I was concerned about it getting too hot if in a case.

I did get a screen protector from BestSkinsEver. If you search in the forums here you should find something with the dimensions you need. I measured myself and followed their recommendation to undersize it a bit. Wish I hadn't. There's a gap all around. Not noticeable unless you look closely and probably not of much practical difference but I'd feel better if it actually went edge to edge. The dimensions posted in the forum here should be a precise fit.

I'd recommend getting ProScan. You can try it for free. If you intend to make a lot of changes to labels like I did, the better editing capabilities will be well worth the cost. And that's not even mentioning being able to control the scanner via the computer.
