Hi forum,

My SDS100 was used on a vent mount in the car for a few months, and sometimes over some seriously bumpy roads.
After a couple of weeks not using it, I started to notice some static that I'm pretty sure wasn't there before, and it makes me think that some solder has gone bad...

Furthermore I found this thread that leads me to believe I'm onto something: SDS100 Static on VHF/UHF Analog Channels

Attached (SDS100.mp3.zip) is a recording I made after setting all the lists to off - when the scanner displays "Scan Mode, Nothing to Scan". I seem to remember that there's usually no noise in that configuration.

Could someone confirm if there's static or not while in "Scan Mode, Nothing to Scan"?
Additional thoughts are welcome.

Thank you.

It could be a problem with the J401 connector, bad solder joints. Power on the scanner with the avoid button pressed and release it when the scanlists start to load. In the scanners menu you should find a debug menu. Set that to save to SD card. When the problem appear you can stop the log and then copy the debug files from the SD card and zip and post here. It will show in that log if you have that J401 problem and would be needed to be resoldered by either Uniden or jonwienke.

Dear Ubbe, I really appreciate your answer, thank you.
I'll look into it and report back.

Do you see any point in me posting these logs on here?

It would be unnecessary to withhold anything by using PM. It might be others who wants to know how they could see if they have a potential problem that will escalate over time.

I'm asking again hoping other owners of the SDS100 can chime in:
When the screen is displaying "Scan Mode, Nothing to Scan", is it expected for the unit to be silent or is there static?

Mine that have been repaired by Jon made no sound when it displayed nothing to scan now that Jon repaired both of my SDS100's they still make no sound when nothing to scan is displayed. I never tested this after they started making the noise linked to the cold solder joint.

If the static sounds like this, it's definitely the solder joint issue.

Thanks buddrousa, appreciate your input.
I'm not allowed to contact other users yet it seems, but luckily Jon has joined the thread so I can take it with him from here.

Cheers!

Hi Jon, thanks for chiming in.

I listened to your video and you probably will agree that the MP3 I attached to this thread in my initial post sounds like this?
Although I would appreciate if you could listen to my file and confirm.

My unit is less than a year old, so under warranty, and I've contacted Uniden today about the problem; now waiting for a follow up.
If I wanted to get a repair done by you, should I contact you using the email address in your signature?

Thanks!

The only difference is that the static is constant rather than pulsing on and off. But that's probably because your unit has a different set of bad joints than mine did (there are 80 total for the connector). Some of the other units I've fixed had constant static like that.

And yes, that's what that address is for.
