I'm also baffled by the idea of putting the USB A and Ethernet ports on the front of this thing, when there is a ton of empty space on the back panel.

Providing there is room and nothing mounted / installed up against that rear panel, I am sure those who are skilled could possibly move those connectors from the front, to the rear. Time will tell.

The giant silver knob looks awkward. Lack of remote head is disappointing. DMR/NXDN "licensing" is a scam IMHO. Keypad looks good. Audio sounded good in the YouTube clip. $499 would be a no-brainer, $549 tops. $600's to $700's is a stretch. Maybe if all the "upgrades" were included, $599 could be justified.
Licensing is hardly a scam it is needed so the Uniden's trunktrack dmr and NXDN correctly. But whatever you want to think that is cool.

Thanks for the comparison. Can we get a top down view so I can see if it will fit in my Jotto Console.

Overpriced and I do not recommend it.

I highly agree with mule1075 on that. Do these easy optional trunking upgrades ourselves when we need or prefer to have them on the new SDS200 for a whole lot less than $89.99 EACH!! What a rip off to & for most of us... That is a huge price spike in optional upgrades.

I will try to get another comparison pic or two once I get back home later this evening. I am at work presently and the 536 is at home.

IMHO stands for "In My Humble Opinion", in case you didn't know.

And since mule1075 is an expert in software licensing agreements, maybe he can tell us whats the going rate for a DMR license? Who would you buy that license from? The DMR company? I think it costs Uniden $3.65 per unit, if anything, since DMR is an open standard, IMHO :)

". All implementations of DMR, even conventional, require you to use Motorola proprietary intellectual properties and require the payment of a royalty to ethically and legally use."

From UPMan's post here:

And as far as "open",

"Open protocol means that anyone can license the technology. It does not mean anyone can use the technology for free. If you want to use the technology, the owner is required to license it to you on an equitable basis with other licensees. If you use the technology without paying the licensing fee, then you are stealing the technology."

I think I said it was my opinion twice in that post. Just like my first post, which makes that 3 times. Not sure why people want to debate my personal opinion. Why don't you post an opinion of your own? Or better yet, explain why you think it's not $3.65. What makes you think $80 is a fair price?

I know DMR and NXDN are open protocol's. Open protocol's are ones where the technical specs are agreed upon by a standards organization and published. If that's the case, then Uniden gets the specs for free, writes their software, and there is no "licensing", making it a money grab. Which is their right to do. Taking those specs and writing the software takes time and money, so they recoup that effort be charging a fee, but I doubt they are paying anyone a license per unit, except maybe for vocoder software. The good vocoder software is not an open standard, I don't think.

a) 3.65 is low for DMR licensing.
b) You are mistaken in your understanding of what an open protocol is. See my previous post, quoted above. Also, see DMR Essentials Licensing Program - Motorola Solutions USA - Motorola Solutions
