I’ve been having issues with my SDS200 disconnecting from the ProScan server and the display going dark and might have found the culprit.

I have an Iogear WiFi dongle connected the the LAN port. The power for the dongle is coming from the front type A USB port.

If I power the dongle from a regular USB charger, everything is fine as far as I know. When the dongle is powered by the front USB type A port, after a while ProScan claims it ‘Detected Loss of LAN Audio’

I have a USB power tester. Plugged into the front type A USB port, it reads 4.77 volts but plugged into anything else it reads around 5 volts.

I have tried several power supplies that have the correct volts and amps and pin out.

My automotive diagnostic gut feeling is an internal fault, possibly a bad solder joint.

Has anyone heard of this before? Searching yielded nothing.

Can you plug the iogear into your tester and then the port on the scanner to see what it shows?
If thats the voltage with the scanner port unloaded thats to low...

5 Volt +/- 0.25 Volts...

That port can only deliver about 200ma... At least on my 200 thats all I can get out of it before it falls out of regulation...

My 200 puts out 4.96. When I connect my Vonets Vap 11G-300 in, it goes as low as 4.5. Then it bounces around for a moment and then stays pretty steady at 4.76.

The bouncing sounds like capacitors in the Vonet charging up...
But then it's stable and in spec after that..

I am now powering the dongle externally. Apparently current is limited to 200ma so I am expecting too much from the jack.

If I'm not mistaken... @fxdscon is using an iogear device... I don't think he has seen any problems with his...
I think the unloaded port voltage of 4.77 is the problem with yours though...

Mine with no load is 4.89. I’ll put a load on it tomorrow and see that it reads

Plugged my Vonets in and the voltage went down to 4.73, then back up to 4.76/4.477 with the device drawing less than 200 mA.
Little out of spec at 4.477... But sounds like the Vonet will run on that low of voltage just fine... Yes?

I don't know. I had mine plugged in their for a few hours when I first got it, but the VHF noise was horrendous so I remoted it.

I finally had to bring in a larger network switch to this radio area to accommodate some other new devices just last week, so I'm connected direct for now and the iogear went to my brother's house. When I was using it here, it was connected to the SDS200 pretty much continuously for 3+ years without any issues. I was a little concerned at first when the iogear seemed to run unusually warm, but it ran at the same temp when tested with it's own included power supply.

I don't recall ever checking the USB loaded voltage when using the iogear, but currently 4.91 is the no load measurement on that SDS200. It's a 2019 build. I do have a second SDS200 here that has always been direct connected, and 4.90 is the no load on that 2021 build.

Explains why the TPlink ethernet to WIFI adapter I'm using now works flawlessly compared to the Vonet adapter. It is powered separately from the scanner.
