My hum came back...I pressed on the top of the case near the plastic front control head and the buzz reduces. I guess I need to take it apart and try again.

I have found the same thing, Paul. Squeezing the front of the case reduces it. I have the factory fix and added some more tinfoil on top of that, but I guess I need more, too.

Try this, buy some copper tape and add two narrow strips of copper tape to the top of the factory fix placing both across the entire part. I overlapped the second strip adding a bit of height (cut the tape to the exact width of the metal).

I did this on both my SDS200's and hum is now virtually gone.

My hum goes away with the warm weather. except when it sit below the air conditioner it will hum again. I guess that means it has the little piece in there. But it is a little to small and expands with the tempurature

Back in May I send off my 200 in cause of the hum. I ordered the clip and installed it and noise still there. They replaced the unit with a new one and no hum was there til after a week I got it. It comes and goes its either low or high hum/noise.

The noise is back --- Pressing on the top of the case near the plastic front control head helps reduce the noise / hum

It's interesting that the problem continues, glad to see that this is a reasonable discussion and no one has come in yet bashing anyone or criticizing anyone for being unfortunate enough to have this issue.

I guess most of you know there was a time that you would be considered a hater and complainer if you are unfortunate enough to be hit with this issue and a fight would break out and the thread would be closed.

I apologize for not giving credit to all those who pioneered the solution when the issue first occurred from the start. Someone had actually removeed the outer case and played around with the inner case while the radio is on shifting it around and it altered the hum so it seemed like it was a ground issue right from the start.

The double sided 3M tape on the front top inner case with the sticky side down applying pressure on the center at the same place you squeeze it to reduce the home was the first attempt to reduce the hum. Then pressing down hard at that spot when tightening the screws.

Some people noticed that the outer case itself was actually bowing causing less pressure than normal on that area.

When the mitigation device was distributed for free people found that reinforcing it with copper tape or making it thicker with layers of the copper tape also increased its effectiveness. Removing the felt strip and cleaning with acetone also increased effectiveness.

What gets me is there are people who are buying multiple 200s who do not have the problem at all and therefore do not understand or have not experienced the same thing that those with the hum have. It is a roll of the dice and to me that is the most frustrating aspect.

I don't gamble and I stay out of casinos.

The only answer is to buy from somebody with a 30-day return policy and hope that the hum does not occur before that time runs out.

As a small business owner I can't agree with this. It's a Uniden problem, the warranty is through them, not the retailer. It's a subversion of the warranty.

It appears as though the only qualification to sell a SDS is agreement to MAP. There isn't anything at the backend to compensate the reseller (I could be wrong).

There are real cost associated with returns, and those could take a real toll on the retailer. This behaviour could drive the smaller shops out of business, leaving only giants like Amazon and Walmart. Do you think Amazon (not a seller on Amazon) will intelligently answer pre-sales questions?

Crap here we go again. Of course we all know the hum is still there. My hum started when I got the radio and has never stopped since with all the fixes in the world. Wonder if the hobbyist could final get a fix for it. Even if we have to solder crap together that would be great. I can't even use an external speaker since it drives me absolutely crazy anymore. I just hate this HUM noise. I want to get use to it but just can't stomach it.

It would be a better radio than great if that hum noise would go away. I guess Paul is still recovering so dealing with an SDS issues or firmware upgrades is out of the question until he returns

I know Paul still recovering I'm sure he is aware of it. I like to use a external speaker but it is crazy loud when the hum comes.

I guess I am lucky with the 3 units I have (SDS200). And no I am not selling. I have had 2 people over to my QTH and verify they are non-hummers...lucky I am! I feel bad for everyone else however I still stand behind Uniden products....good or bad
