My SDS200 will loose audio but turning it off and then back on will correct it. I run an external amplified UNIDEN Bearcat speaker and have not disconnected it from the scanner yet. That’s because the radio is buttoned up inside a console in my vehicle and before I start digging into the console I thought I’d first ask if others are experiencing my issue. If it continues I know I will need to remove the scanner and place it on a test bench... checking the external speaker, etc.

Does the speaker meet the requirements listed in the manual I know it is no the simple 8 ohm 4 ohm output on the scanner.
PAGE 14 from the user manual.
CONNECTING AN EXTENSION SPEAKER In a noisy area, an optional amplified extension speaker, positioned in the right place, might provide more comfortable listening. Plug the speaker cables 1/8-inch (3.5-mm) mini-plug into your scanners back-panel Ext. Sp. Jack. Warning! If you connect an external speaker to the scanner’s Ext. SP jack or headphone jack, never connect the audio output line to a power supply and ground. This might also damage the scanner. All audio output is Class-D amplified (PWM). Never connect Ext. SP jack or headphone jack to an external Class-D AMP

Since the external amplified speaker is a Uniden product, was recommended as the one to use by Uniden, I believe it meets the requirements stated in the manual. Add to that my never reading any cautions when using it on the SDS200 and I think its compatible. I doubt my issue has anything to do with the external speaker. Thanks for the input... at this stage everything is suspect.

As it is an amplified speaker it might have a turn off circuit that switches off the speaker at lower sound levels.
It could be something wrong with that function so yes, run the scanner without the ext speaker as a test to rule it out.

I have two amplified UNIDEN speakers, one with a light that is lit while active and one without the lamp. I don’t know if both operate the same way with one minus the lamp. But I believe the external speaker is probably not causing my problem. However, it’s something that must be checked definitively before being eliminated as a possible cause. I was hoping there were others that experienced the same as I would come forward. Thanks for the info. QUOTE="tvengr, post: 3248247, member: 1243946"]
If that is a Uniden BC23A speaker, the amp shuts off with no audio. I installed 10K resistors in mine to keep the amp on and prevent upcutting the audio.
