With the 'retirement' of the XTS and XTL series of radios by Motorola, the RCS agencies have started replacing their older radios with APX 4000/4500/6000/6500/7000/7500 radios. The XTS/XTL5000 and APX radios are capable of operating on 700 MHz.

SDSD has been operating on 700 MHz in the Detention facilities (see 'System 71') for a period of time now. With Riverside County switching to 700, the SDSD specialty units (such as SAR and ASTREA) have received APX radios, and Patrol operations are slowly starting to be switched on an area-by-area basis, starting with Rural and the northern station areas.

A 700 MHz 'mutual aid' zone has been developed and will be rolled out later this year as the first round of rebanding programming takes place. The RCS is not migrating to 700 MHz.

I have heard that Vista deputies staged a protest over their new APX's, and actually were reissued (given their choice of) XTS3000/5000 handhelds. They said they couldn't understand anything, they sounded weird, you know, all the type of complaints someone has when they get dumped and move on to a new spouse. :)

At least the next-gen RCS won't be TDMA Phase II. From what I hear, that sounds identical to MotoTRBO/DMR, which I find not to be too pleasant to listen to.

Jeff and Mike,

The next generation system will be P25. Beyond that, we don't know, as the procurement of the next generation system has yet to start. And once a contract is in place, there will be a lengthy build-out period; so I wouldn't worry about changes for another 2-3 years at the earliest.

Eventually phase 2 but like said it'll take some time and down road it'll take time to replace the mega ton of mobiles and portables. Not to mention agencies who also get assigned sd cointy radios for interop or mutual aide agreements. You bet the apx can be loaded with vhf and 7/800 frequencies and they'll prob play with it a little. Distant relative over there is in the sdsd.

Off the top of my head, 7CALL50, 7TAC55, 7LAW61, 7FIRE63, 7MED65, and 7GTAC57 for San Diego / Imperial Counties, plus 7TAC56, 7LAW62, 7FIRE64 and 7MED66 for Riverside.

Since all of PSEC and OC Law Enforcement is full Encrypted does anybody hear any buzz about SD switching some talkgroups to encryption?

I know that San Diego City and RCS does not use encryption or maybe a few talkgroups at the most.

I just hope they do not drink the Kool-Aid.....

I don't understand why more law agencies don't run encryption. Probably mostly has to do with the need to have every radio run it, or you can't do it. All those new APX radios as far as I know come with built in cheap encryption.

Paul,

With all due respect, I've had enough. As a one of the people who maintain these systems, and keep a watchful eye on the goings on in the hobbyist arena, it's time for me to say this: YOU NEED TO STOP THINKING OUT LOUD. You're embarrassing yourself. Repeatedly.

You work in the news gathering business. Rather than spreading misinformation, guesses and opinions, just state facts. Please? Does "I heard..." work on the 6 oclock news? Or in court?

You are one of the reasons encryption is getting cheaper and cheaper.

Those "in the know" know who I am, and that I speak the truth about myself.

Have a nice day.

With all due respect d119, I don't for a moment think any of my comments would in any way affect an agency in making a decision to encrypt. Maybe if I had said "it is surprising" instead of "I don't understand why" you may have taken the comment a little differently.

And I would have to say my comments lead to people like you "in the know" having low regards for RR forums. the other people "in the know" also say amazing things about the new APX radios, I was just passing on reports from people working with the new gear that aren't "in the know" themselves about the technology. I apologize for my lack of respect for the forum in general. (no sarcasm) :)

Thank you for insight... I need to plug this in... I heard a surveillance agency using I-Tac-3 today using 156.7 p.l.

Are those (or some of them) repeated?

Paul

The 700 MHz channels? If that's what you are asking, yes, there is infrastructure place, but currently only one comm center has access at the resources. It will function like the ICALL and ITAC repeaters on 800 MHz now.
