Unlike older scanners, where you could either do search ranges or scan, the new models let you do both.
Reading this thread, http://www.radioreference.com/forums/showpost.php?p=964171&postcount=4 , I would like some user comments:
I was not aware the newer models could do this. Sounds like a nice feature.I do not see that in any of the GRE models, which makes me wonder why not. Since they came out after this feature was implemented, I wonder if there are problems. Is it too distracting to have traffic other than the search band? UPman's answer suggests you can use a custom search as well as service searches. Is that the case? I assume it is sequential (search complete limits and then scan all enabled frequencies), and not interrupted every X seconds.

You didn't look hard enough. With the PSR500/600 and the RS twins you most certainly can program search ranges and mix those ranges with freqs and/or talkgroups that are scanned.

With the Uniden models, yes it is sequential. You can define how long you want the scanner to "dwell" on each search (since going through a complete sweep could take many seconds). When it hits the search again it picks up where it left off the last time.
