Searching for a BCD396T Digital Scanner in NY

Hello,

I am new to this forum, I am from the Toronto area...

There is quite a difference in price (Canada / USA) for the new BCD396T Portable Digital Scanner. The average price in the USA seems to be $530.00 US, which is about $620.00 CDN... In Canada the price is $850.00 CDN, which is about $730.00 US!!!!

So, needless to say, I am searching for one of these units in the Buffalo, NY area. I was in the Albany area today, but ScannerWorld is out of stock! I called around, but found it difficult to find out who has this unit in stock (Uniden gave me a number for the NY distributor, but they do not deal with the "upper state").

I am here seeking assistance, if anyone knows a store that may have this unit in the Buffalo area, please let me know!

Aren't there other dealers that will ship to Canada? From Rochester the shipping charge is about $35.00 US to Toronto. I don't see why any dealer would not ship to Canada.

I imagine there is, but then I would get dinged by Customs for the Duty.

Is there somewhere in Rochester that has these units??

I had to by mine from www.Hamstation.com, there are no Uniden dealers around here that I know of.

What is ScannerWorld trying to do to you guys? What % of a dollar do you pay for customs?

Thanks for that info, I was hoping to buy mine in person (instead of online) although I do buy and sell on Ebay quite often. I figured I should easily be able to find one somewhere in my travels, it is just where to look?!?

ScannerWorld had some in stock this past weekend, so when I got a call to go to the Albany area to pick up one of our wrecked Rental Cars, I thought great, I can pick up the radio at the same time. Good thing I called ahead of time!

I forget what the percentage Duty is... on something worth $530.00 US, I would imagine it would be almost $100.00 CDN in Duty and fees, maybe more if shipped by UPS (damn Brown).

I will call around when I arrive in Buffalo (and get ahold of a phone book), maybe find a live person to buy this unit off of. Otherwise, I suppose I will order it online, and have it sent to our Avis garage in Buffalo, then I can pick it up from there.

So, it looks like it will be an online transaction for me, ship to our Buffalo garage, and take it from there. I really expected Scanners to be more readily available in the USA, although Radio Shack has Scanners on hand, they don't have this particular one, nor do they have their "top of the line" units on hand?!?

Radio Shack does not, as a rule, carry competitors' products. There are some independent dealers that are authorized to carry both Radio Shack and Uniden (like Grove Enterprises), but you're not likely to find Uniden scanners in most Radio Shack stores.

Not for quite a while. Pay phones are no longer considered profit centers.

Most of them have the Pro-96, although they may be out of stock of any item at any time. But independent stores aren't required to carry any particular scanner, to the best of my knowledge.

Problem solved. You can also have it sent to you from the Avis garage if you don't want to make the trip.

I know that Uniden use to make the Scanners for Radio Shack, they just slapped the Radio Shack labels on them.

I have found a store (bearcatscanner.com) in CA, they are selling them for $509.00, shipping under $10.00, and no tax if shipped to NY! So this looks like the route I will take, just waiting to hear back if they have any in stock....

Anyone have any good / bad / ugly about this particular store?

Well, I went ahead and ordered my Scanner from BearCatScanners in CA, it should arrive at our Buffalo Garage this coming Friday. Nothing like saving $300.00 CDN ordering through the USA! I suppose that I will have to read up on this unit, off I go to download the manual....
