When I lived in Federal Way and worked near Boeing Field, I found picking up Federal frequencies of all types very difficult. I figure it had to do with the tall buildings in the city, but then most repeaters and transmitters are on top of the tallest buildings to include the Federal Building.

I have a lot of Seattle area frequencies to include Federal which includes the Postal Inspectors who are very busy there. One of my projects is to take what I have and scan them into a pdf and put them someplace where they can be downloaded. Sometime during the first part of the new year most likely.

Yes your Pro96 would hear the encrypted communications as noise.

While relaxing in the common room of our condo I was playing around with my Pro97. I heard activity on 164.8 I don't remember unit id's heard. Shame on me for not having my notebook with me. I did hear the call sign of KOA-615 at least that's what it sounded like.. According to on line sources this is United states secret service frequency. . one of many with the channel designation "x-ray"
This of course the Seattle Washington office.

Steve,

While you are correct that 164.8 does fall in the Secret Service "X-Ray"pool, but in this case it is used by the US Forest Service. Some of the transmitter locations include Capitol Peak, Gold Mountain, Metheny, Mt. Ellis and Olympia.

A lot of other federal agencies have that frequency assigned for their use, with the Secret Service getting to use it on a secondary basis.

Here is what I have, Steve:

US Forest Service, Olympia National Forest

Quilcene Ranger District
164.8000 MHz, 123.0pl - Olympia NF direct (simplex)
164.8000 MHz, 179.9pl - Crow Nest repeater
164.8000 MHz, 162.2pl - Maynard repeater

Sole Duck Ranger District
164.8000 MHz, 97.4pl - Jefferson Ridge repeater
164.8000 MHz, 110.9pl - South Mountain repeater

You might have heard KOE615 which is one of the Olympic NF call signs.
