To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I want to confirm something, if I have a radio that has an authorized ID on a TRS and I am an authorized user of the system, and I add a second system to add TG's for monitoring only with a random ID that is not a system generated ID(therefore it will not transmit via PTT) can the system shut down the entire radio? or just kill the bad system ID #2, upon affiliation(if system watch finds the bad ID)? Not at all trying to hack, I am just trying to decide with another user if I am right or not.

Thanks

Hello, If the system administrator is ok with it and you are authorized for the other talk groups then you are ok, have them program it for you. If you decide to program it on your own, please check other posts from users who have done this and got their radios inhibited or fired from the agency they work for. Check out the batlabs forum for some past examples. With these new systems its much better to get a scanner, then to have your radio turned in to a brick just to listen to a few other talk groups.

Thanks
Shawn

I have the capability to shut down the whole radio. Also with the Astro CPS you are unable to load in the old codeplug to bring it back to life. When you read the radio it says that it has been inhibited and to call the admin.

There is no way to shut down just 1 system in the radio...it all goes away.

Once your radio tries to affialte with the bad id, a brick your radio will become, and you will most likely lose your privliages with the system admin. Just ask him.

In the scan mode, I don't believe the radio tries to affiate to other talkgroups UNTIL you select that channel via the channel knob.

If your radio model is zone capable, program the other talkgroups to a zone that you cannot select via the channel knob. For instance, if you can do zones, program your authorized stuff in zone 1, and the talkgroups in zone 2. preprogram your scan lists that reflect the other tg in zone 2. DO NOT program a button, softkey or switch for zone selection so that you cannot accidently switch over to them (and thus affiate).

In the 1st generation astro radio's, this works with radio's that affiated. I don't think it changed for the 2nd generation, but I haven't played with the newer xts this way yet.

PJ i can tell you that an XTS5k in scan mode will affiliate on every talkgroup when it stops for activity.

bottom line, if its not your personally owned radio, leave it alone. You would have 2 system admins pissed off if that thing got nailed.. If i remember correctly, there are only 2 ways to get an ASTRO25 radio un-inhibited, either the system that zapped it has to do it, or Ma M, and i can imagine they would have lots of questions as to why the admin wont do it.

I believe that is only true for the older firmware revisions such as 2.xx.xx. I seem to recall an SRN about it. Systems were brought to their knees with so much affiliation going on, they had to scrap the feature. Next XTS5000 I get in the shop for repair, I'm going to try & confirm this.

I thought the 5K did or use to affiliate when on scan and stopped for activity, but does the 2500? the ones we have have host ver5.00.01, and DSP ver of 5.00.00. I am not going to do any programming, our shop would do that, there are just some TG's we may need to monitor, but tx never needed, and if accidental tx could potentially cause issues. This is why I was wondering about creating a 2nd system with a bad ID and only scan those TG's while on the "good" system, not awitch to those specific channels. These 2500's we have are new (6 mos old) But I am not sure I have seen "ZONES" in the CPS as PJH advised. The only "ZONE" items I see are ZONE CHANNEL ASSIGNMENT. Thanks guys (& gals, if applicable)

THe 5K used to re-affiliate in the scan mode, but it has since been removed and doesn't do it any more. The 2500 does not do that either.

If the 2500 is a "legal radio" why don't you ask the admin to assign you a second id that has it's tx capabilites turned off in the system. That way you can listen all day long and if you key up will get a bunk.

A problem I can see with this solution is in our system (P25 ver 6.3), when the radio affiliates as the second ID that can't talk via system settings, the radio gets a second scan list for that second ID, can't talk on any talkgroup -even your assigned talkgroup, and your assigned talkgroups need to be programmed into the radio again under that second ID. Cumbersome. You'd have to switch back to the original ID to respond to calls.

If your system is different than this, I can't say whether this would be true.

Remember also, while you're listing to interesting conversations with your radio on another talkgroup, you won't hear anything happening on the talkgroup you're supposed to be listening to. (Your boss may not like this!)

To chime in on the "unassigned radio ID" idea, at the very least the system would never let you listen to any talkgroup because the ID doesn't belong on the system. Beyond that, see above conversations about your radio becoming an inhibited "brick".

Correct...it would depend on how the scan list was set up as to how it would react. I'll have to try mine but I'm a 3.x so it may act differently. I do see where your coming from though.

As to the legit ID or not, I would think there is a field in a 6.x system to allow a valid id but not give the radio PTT permissions. I know I can do it in my 3.x....It's one of my steps in inhibiting illegal radios. ;-)

Here, there, everywhere.
So if scan does NOT affiliate with the TG it's monitoring, then ***IN THEORY*** could you set the radio to be parked on nothing at all but still scan and thus not affiliate with anything at all?

Note for all you /\/\-Lovers out there: ***JUST A THEORY***

thats a plausable theory, but keep this in mind, the FIRST time it doesnt do that, or you accidentally select a talkgroup, your radio WILL affiliate (ALL astro25 radios are set to auto affiliate, WITHOUT any way to set it to not do it)

if your radio gets bricked by another system, i would imagine you would be in big crap with the people you work for.

My advise is to not program a radio you dont own, and especially with a system you do not have permission to be on.

If I remember correctly, what *should work* is that you park your radio on a conventional channel, but put all the talkgroups in a scan list. I believe that this did work with the 1st generation ASTRO radios.

Aside from the forced affiation with the 2nd generation radios, I am not sure what else has changed. With certain firmware revisions there was a flaw that DID cause the radio to affiate and defillate each talkgroup while in scan no matter what. This has since been corrected with recent firmware. I don't recall which firmware did this, but HOST 5 seems to come to mind.
