This almost scares me, the fact they actually need a backup for the backup.

Ask Louisiana how much backups may have helped their situation a couple of years ago. Redundancy in this case is very good. Buying two extra Elmo DVD's in case one breaks to keep the kids happy (i.e a back up to the back up - that would scare me)

You'll find out that a massive storm is capable of knocking repeaters offline -- MUCH better to have preplanned backup(s) vs trying to move everyone to simplex by transmitting on the output freq.

Sounds like the hams had their repeaters in place and when one was decided to be the "storm spotting repeater" the others offered to serve as backups so both were named backup. Most likely the Primary one is the more powerful/taller repeater and the secondary ones are shorter/older/less dependable.

The backup repeaters are most likely located in different geographically locations
The main repeater gets wiped out with a tornado and the backup is affected form the power outage then the third repeater would then become the primary communication source for emergency communications.
During an emergency you don’t always have time to restructure your communications system. So a backup for the backup is feasible.

I understand the reasoning behind this, yet don't you think this would just cause that much more frustration for the end-user trying to keep track of which repeater is next?

Plus it starts a lot of questions, would the VHF and UHF be linked in pairs as backups or no?

I've listened to the K0LNE repeater and its much better than the highpro 76 machine. At one time there was talk of making 76 just for emergency ops. Last year I thought they talked about how a certain PL would be for storm spotting, another PL would be for some other ARES stuff, etc.

A lot of these people just don't play radio enough or even know how to run their radio let alone change a PL. They probably wouldn't even know how to go on the repeater output in the event of an emergency and try calling a net in simplex.

It would cause more frustation if there was no backup backup listed, and the main and first backup went down!

I have listened to all of them when I am Lincoln. They are all not used much when I am there but 146.85 does cover the most area even more than 146.760. 146.76 used to be on Beaver Crossing TV tower so it covered awesome. It is now near Old Cheney and Highway 2. But since it is much lower in elvation and the higher noise floor cause it to have reduced coverage.

Does NWS listen to 76 or any of these repeaters when Lancaster has spotters out?

Yes they do. The NWS can "reach" the 76 repeater don't know about the rest.

haha. Probably helps then if the winds are from the SW to help blow the signal to them.

Nice avatar there too. Shouldn't you update your license? You gonna upgrade now?
