can you listen to secret service? President will be here tomorrow . I work across from the airport and he is going to the convention center 3 miles from my work!

There is usually a lot of activity on state and local police, sheriff, and airport police; tactical and traffic channels (escort/road closures) provided they are not encrypted as well. (They are usually in-the-clear for mutual aid purposes as many local agencies may be involved).

actually monitor the Sky Harbor tower and ground control frequencies...you will hear AF-1 on approach, landing and depature!!! Was interesting to hear the pilots call ground control and ID as SAM????? to advise they were starting engines. Then just minutes later, they asked for permission to taxi as AF1.

Some errors there (or not current)--like 164.175 is not WHCA paging but used by another DC area agency for P25 comms.

put in 165.375 and 164.8875 they are digital nets with AVL and occasional voice in a custom format not P25.

They do use clear and encrypted P25 with NAC of 001.

I remember listening to Secret Service during the Democratic debate in 1988. The debate was held in Durham NH on the UNH campus. I was around UNH during that time. The active channels were Tango (164.65MHz) and Charlie (165.375MHz). The majority of the activity was on Charlie. Radio traffic was analog with occasional use of DES encryption on Tango channel.

The problem the Secret Service ran into was there were so many protectors (agents) required for so many protectees (candidates) and not enough newer radios available with DES encryption. They had to dig out their boxes of ancient Motorola HT220 bricks so all agents had a radio to use. The end result was that more than 90% of Secret Service traffic was on Charlie channel and in the clear. There was occasional use of Tango channel with ENC. It made for some great listening during that time.

SAM is Special Air Mission. The aircraft is only AF1 when it is carrying the President. Presumably Trump had not been on board the aircraft when they were using that call sign. The support aircraft (C17s C5s, C130s) will also use the SAM call sign. The tankers and fighter CAP aircraft would use their normal tactical call signs, as they are not associated with the Air Mobility Command.
