Where are the NOTICE TO MARINERS simulcast transmitters located in Wisconsin? I know of Milwaukee, Port Washington and Sturgeon Bay - but there have to be more than that for the areawide Channel 22 Alpha (157.100) broadcasts... Thanks.

I WORK ON THE MI SIDE SO I DON'T KNOW TOO MUCH ABOUT THE WI SIDE, BUT WHEN I GO OVER I WILL LEARN WHAT HIGH SITES MILWAUKEE HAS AND POST IT! EASTERN LAKE HAS FIVE HIGH SITES AND FIVE LOW LEVELS (LOCAL ANTs THAT COVER GAPS IN COVERAGE) THEY ARE AS FOLLOWS: NORWOOD, FRANKFURT, LUDINGTON, PORT SHELDON AND STVENSVILLE. LOW LEVELS ARE: TRAVERSE CITY A/S, MANISTEE, MUSKEGON, GRAND HAVEN AND MICHIGAN CITY, IN.

Is the high site in Two Rivers the one way up on the power plant stacks? I heard them the other day down here on the scanner.

I don't think Two Rivers has a power plant.
There are two nuclear power plants (Kewaunee, Point Beach) north of Two Rivers and a coal fired power plant to the south in Manitowoc.

Hey CT...

You a TC or OS? Just wondering...I'm a retired BM1. Spent 18 out of 20 in the 9th...We got some kid playing in his dad's boat in the back yard near Duluth calling Mayday's...Twice now. Can't wait till they lock on (The FCC) with the satelite and catch the prankster...They did that in Cleveland and caught the dude walking downtown w/ a handheld and arrested him...Got a year in jail and $10,000 fine.

Hey Boats,
Yes I am an OS. We move to Mil side later this month and we will have to learn the Mil side just like they will have to learn ours. But yes, yesterday I already heard the idiots out there asking us for radio checks and playing on the radio and driving us and the lakers crazy...THE NIGHTMARE HAS JUST BEGUN! I saw a demo on the new RESCUE21 and I must say that it is awesome! It pinpoints an exact location (DF,GPS) with only a 2 second mic click. However, it will not be online in the Great Lakes until late '07 to early '08.. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask!

Sector Detroit is alreay starting to get busy with 'maday with no position given' and 'boat taking on water' . You can tell when it realy gets busy and the USCG starts calling the Sheriff.

The worst thing that the FCC could have done was to do away with licensing of marine radio equipment aboard so called pleaseure craft. In addition, ALL marine radios should be GPS signal enhanced where the coordinates are transmitted on 16 or 22A every time the mic button is pressed in addition to sending out the electronic serial number of the radio as cell phones do. Sure, it would cost a bit more to equip the Coast Guard with decoding equipment, BUT at least the communications center would know WHERE the craft is and who it is registered to... AND which family is allowing the kids to "play with" Dad's marine portables. This would reduce the "false alarms" significantly.

The problem with your idea is that it would swamp the USCG with too much data.

Not the case - This same system is used in other services to monitor the location and unit numbers of Public Safety vehicles, utility vehicles, taxi cabs, over the road trucking (by satelite link currently) and school busses...

The data being transmitted along with the voice signal comes up in a small LCD display on the operator's console. The GPS coordinates and ID are there if needed. If not needed it is simply ignored.

That Is Kind Of How Dsc Works But Only When The Person Pushes The Distress Button Or Calls Another Vessel Using Their Unique Id Number The Fcc Is Supposed To Be Issuing. The Cg Is Not Vhf Dsc Capable At This Time But When We Do Get It It Is Supposed To Cut Down On The Hailing Traffic On 16 And Eventually Boaters Will Not Even Be Required To Monitor 16 Anymore! But...like Most Things In The Cg, This Equipment Is Taking Forever To Come Online...

The old CG Motto! "We do so much, with so little!"

When I was at Base Detroit we always bummed the Marine Corps trucks at Broadhead to haul cable or equipment...We had to beg FinCen to buy us a new skid steer to use around the Yard! The old '74 Massey Ferguson tractor just wasn't getting the job done!

We get a few bear hunters running around in their toyota's w/ marine VHF's, but most have the business VHF radios...
