Secure digital radios

I read this article, http://www.radioreference.com/modul...amp;sid=728&mode=&order=0&thold=0, and was wondering if it is possible to listen to these kinds of transmissions or is this just a scare tactic? Is this a trunked system being discussed in this article?

Yes its trunked, yes digital secure exists.. If its a non encrypted Motorola system you can hear it on a scanner.. if its an EDACS Provoice system.. your out of luck.

The system mentioned in the article is Provoice, but the good news is some talkgroups are simulcasted onto the states digital system (MPSCS), which is 9600 baud APCO-25.

Keep in mind PROVOICE is not "Secure"

Unless it is known that the agency is using encryption on top of being PROVOICE then they're most likely just PROVOICE. Provoice is simply just another form of transmission. It's not secure in nature though. The reason why we "scanning hobbiest" can't listen to provoice is because the developer of provoice refuses to release the technology to scanner manufactures. Therefore we don't have a scanner capable of decoding the provoice digital signal, like we have with the motorola astro digital signal.

Jimsokol might be correct though. My county's public safety is using EDACS PROVOICE but at least one of the police departments on it has analog talkgroups as well and I have heard dispatch calls on those analog talkgroups. Unfortunately it was only during new year's eve. But the ability for them to simulcast their digital comms onto an analog talkgroup is possible (if they so choose to do so).

Motorola has also not released Astro (original VSELP Version) to anyone either. However they have evolved most systems (and all their new equipment) to Project 25 Common Air Interface.

Geese I thought this topic on "secure digital radios" was about a scanner or radio with a slot for those digital camera cards called SD, secure digital. :?
