Sedgwick Co. Announces Construction of New Safety Center

Sedgwick County Commissioners announce today that construction will begin next month on the New Sedgwick County Public Safety Center located on the southwest corner of Main St. between Murdock and Pine Street, Directly across from WFD Station #1.

The 7 million dollar facility will house Emergency 911 dispatchers and the Sedgwick County Emergency Management Team (SCEM). They expect it to be completed and operational within 1 year, with latest in emergency communications equipment and technology.

Right now I dont think so, I think they have been sold on the Astro Sys for a while. They may have been promised upgrades and extended warrenties.

Update

What is the latest on the construction of the new dispatch center. I heard in October they hit a snag when tearing down the old building. Are they back at work now?

Give me some more detail on the "snag" situation?

Thats a new one on me. I knew theres was issues regarding who was going to get the contract to do the site as far as take down and construction. But thats since been resolved.

Any new information on this?
I'm thinking of buying a new scanner and am wondering if I should go with digital now or wait. Maybe see if a new wiz-bang radio comes out before Wichita goes digital.
Any thoughts?

Well I, dug around (no pun intended) and couldnt find any new info as to what was going to be put in as far as equipment.

So far it remains the same with the only new item being added is encryption on the TA (talk arounds) wich has been operational for a long while now. Id say atleast since early May or June.

As far as the hold up or snags...My sorces are closed on the subject....Its not that there not telling me anything, I just dont think they know anything new!

Our new city manager got every dept heads hopping at the moment, so Ive been busy as well getting things ready for the new year...So my time has been sort of limited.

I'll keep proding around for any new info

Well, after a lot of coffee and some long coversations heres what I do know....
GPS Tracking!

Our department is getting set up for Mobile PC and GPS Tracking so that field supervisor can can now have the offices in the truck and our locations can be tracked at anytime.

This isnt new technology, but it is new for departments that are dealing with maintenance.

There was discusions that each supervisor will be given a BlackBerry to act as a link between him and the Laptop, Then the laptop would link into the Main office via radio.

(ITS About time) My monthly reports are 1" to 2" inch thick with redundant info! Now my daily reports can be done in the field and work orders can be sent to me as the come in as "real time."

Admin, can also look and see where the vehichles are at, At all times!
(Breakfast for some people just got a lot shorter)

The WMTA has been using this for over 5 years and seem to have worked out the kinks.
Very impressive! I hear KDOT uses the same technology.

Now heres the kicker...
I do not know where the money coming from to pay for the Laptops, PDA's or the GPS... No one has been able to give me a straight answer. I dont know if its hand - me - downs from other departments or if its all new! I have not heard of any grant money for this unless its for LE or ES, and my dept doesnt fit into neither one of those.

Just another observation...

Well GW. Bush. Sr was in town the other day.... Did anyone notice the activity on the TA freqs?
I know there encrypted... but every one of them was active!

My fed freqs was dead....No activity.... So much for that list!
