I'm a newbie here...interested in getting started. I'm looking for a portable scanner that I can use in New Jersey to pick up EMS/Fire/Police. I read in this forum that NJSP might be going to digital at some point this year, but the digital scanners seem to be out of my price range (~$200). At this point, I don't want to invest $500 in a hobby that I may not stick with...I can always upgrade.

Based on reviews, I seems that the BC246T is good fit for me. My question is whether I will be able to pickup NJSP with the 246T (and for how much longer...end of this year?). Are other units a better fit for me? Mind you, I am an absolute newbie -- so easy to use interfaces would be a plus. I should add that air traffic control would be interesting as well (I know the Uniden units lack MilAir, but what about commercial air?)

I also don't mind picking up used equipment if someone on the forum here is looking to upgrade -- I'll check the for sale forum, once I decide which unit to buy.

Thanks for your opinions,
gn

I'm here a lot
Given the parameters of price and what your interests are, it seems like
you have made an informed decision with the BC 246T.
I see that two of the NJSP systems are analog now:Troop A , Troop C

Your fellow NJ members in the New Jersey forum may have answers for
you regarding when the digital switch-over may occur.

If you want to enjoy what is available now and not break the bank
I would agree with your choice.

Right now there is no Public ETA for digital switch-over. Speculation is that change over will be very slow and most groups would probably remain analog anyway.

Troop B & C are now digital capable and Troop A will be by the end of September. As nosoup4u stated, most talkgroups will stay analog and the migration to digital will be slow, although more sensitive talkgroups may go digital/encrypted sooner.

The BC246T would be a safe bet. By the time the NJSP went totally digital, we'll probably be on the BC696's by then. I love my 246 and would recommend it to anyone. The only thing I would suggest is doing the squelch mod on it. That made a big difference reception wise.
