Selectivity and front-end overload

What's a great radio for HIGH Selectivity and resistance to front-end overload? I monitor two primary frequencies. One, I can see the commecial tower in the distance (about 10 miles away). The second one is located over 100 miles away, and has 11 element beam pointed at it with a recieve amplifier inline. These frequencies are separated by 15Khz. (151.385 vs 151.400)

Bells and whistles aside, which scanners are known for high selectivity and front-end strength?

None! :twisted:

If you want to monitor specific frequencies and need good selectivity, I would get a commercial radio.

I thought that might be the case. That's too bad. I have an amateur VHF radio (Kenwood TM-261A) hooked up temporarily now, and it is WAY better than the scanners I have. Just don't want to tie up a two way radio to just listen with. I may buy a couple older (and cheap) crystal controlled amateur radios with fixed frequencies in them to do the trick. Can't believe that the high-end scanner radios available don't have decent selectivity and front-end overload protection. Amazing for $500 + radio's. As far as commercial rigs, which ones would suit?

I've heard that the Icom recievers have really good sensitivity and a very good front end. If you get a Handheld, use the supplied antenna.

you heard right about the icoms i run a couple of them and they are hard to beat.

I have used Yaesu FT-7100M and two Icom IC-2720Hs the past few years.
They have better sensitivity than a scanner but slectivity is about as poor
and they both have bad intermod problems.
My old Alinco DR-590T and other radios I had back in the 80s before
were less sensitive than the current radios but
had much better selectivity and never had intermod.

I am pretty well convinced that modern ham radios and scanners are both
just consumer grade junk. Current vhf/uhf ham rigs have crappy receivers
because the ham manufacturers want to make them into all band scanners
and 9600 baud data radios. So what are my choices? Stick with cheap ham
stuff or buy expensive non-frequency agile commercial radios.

My Icom 2800 mobile is the most sensitive radio I've ever seen or used. A normal commercial two-way radio has a sensitivity between .17uV and .25uV (thereabouts). The 2800... .07uV. The thing hears things loud and clear that hardly break squelch on other radios. Of course, sometimes it is too sensitive like is stated above.

Sensitivity is not an issue. Selectivity and front end overload is.

I would consider the following: The local tower should be on a receiver with tripple conversion and/or PL Tone. The DX location should be on a seperate receiver with tripple conversion and/or PL Tone. You did not state the direction of the local tower to the DX tower. The local tower problem should be easy to solve. Good Luck, Larry
