I have both now, and have run them side-by-side.

So far I can't tell which one is better on conventional VHF low, VHF high or UHF.

Are they technically the same scanner except the 996 does digital? If so, then in theory they should perform the same on analog, correct?

Anybody have experience with both?

I have quite a few of each and I've never been able to see any difference between those models on analog frequencies.

But ... all of mine are connected to outside antennas, so they get lots of signal.

I do like to use the BCT15X to monitor encrypted fed frequencies.
While the 996 wastes time trying to decode those transmissions, the 15X 'catches' most transmissions immediately.

Even though I can't hear what's being said, it does let me know that something is happening in the area.
