Serial port interference?

I was experimenting with Alpha Tags on my feed and made a rather bizarre observation. With the serial cord plugged into my BC346XT there seemed to be a short delay (perhaps 0.5s) at the start of each transmission during which some sort of interference/overmodulation could be heard. I'm not sure if this is a result of maybe a poor USB-serial interface or perhaps poor computer hardware.

I'm still a relatively new feed provider so I apologize if this seems either obvious or vague.

Thanks.

I bet you have a ground-loop. Put an audio isolation transformer between the scanner's audio jack and the sound-card's input. That will separate the ground-loop the serial cable is creating.
