I recognize that this forum deals mainly with external, elevated antennas (antennae?) and cables. But it seemed the place to ask for advice. I can't manage an external antenna at present. Is anyone aware of a "better" replacement for the fairly flimsy set back antenna Uniden provides? Is there even the potential for better performance with a (any?) set back antenna?
Thanks!

Yes there is, but before anyone can recommend anything you need to tell us what band/frequencies you're interested in improving reception on. Antennas are usually optimized for certain areas of the radio spectrum. There is no one-does-all antenna that will also provide great performance.

For starters, if you're going for the 800MHz band, I'd suggest the Radio Shack RS-800. If it's the 150/450MHz bands, then I'd recommend the Diamond RH-77CA. Both of these will also require a 90 degree BNC adapter.

Thanks!

I appreciate the reply, SIG-INT. Band-specific choices never occurred to me! I monitor both VHF-Hi and UHF in far north suburban Chicago. Would that boost either recommendation?
Thanks again.

+1 vote on the RH77CA. Been using one for years for VHF/UHF. Definitely an improvement. (And pretty cheap now at a little over $20.)
