Setting up a New Radio

I realize there are probably twice as many answers as there are scanner enthusiasts but I'd like to hear what people think. (This is in the Whistler forum because I just got a TRX-1.)

You get a new scanner and it's time to start setting it up. Are there any settings you change right off the bat? Longer default delay times? Priority on/off? Attenuation on/off? etc. Obviously we all have to program our frequencies and trunks, so I'm wondering about all the other settings.

I have made some changes to mine recently.
General Settings:
Display Advance
Blink 1.00 1.00
contrast 12
Key Beep on volume set at 2

Under Advanced Features :
Rec/PCIF Options
DSP Level Adapt 64
ADC Gain -2
DAC Gain -4

Audio Options:
I changed Encrypted digital audio settings mode to: Silence

oh I also changed in the Display Options my Signal Meter, it was always pegged so I added 100 to each setting, now it is a bit on the tight side but not bad.

What is the "Blink" setting? I can't find a reference in the manual.....

How fast it toggles between the Talk ID and the TG Number.
Then there is flash for the LED

I've been thinking about changing the Encrypted settings, too, but I think I'd rather the scanner didn't even stop. If it's encrypted, just keep scanning. What do the PCIF options do?

I think it might be closely related to hardware tolerances. Whistler have set the defaults to work with any scanner. Your 420 setting for Bar 5 would never get activated in my TRX-2. I have for TRX-2:

yup just keyed up a Ham rig 146.52 here an only got 3 bars
now set at

Seems meter is much more generous in digital than Analog

It should be a signal strength related function and not modulation dependent. I do not have a signal generator with a digital modulation but it doesn't matter if I use a clean carrier or a fully modulated one with a 1Khz test tone. I think I set the 5:th bar to light up at around 500uV that equals -45dBm.
