OK, I bought this little gadget called a mini-NAS and it connects a 1tb USB drive to a LAN port on my home network. It seems to be working ok, I can access it from all 3 pc's on the LAN via FTP.

However, I would like to be able to map it as a network drive with a drive letter (I was thinking N:) to make it easier to use, especially for my wife, by drag and drop in Explorer.

This gadget came with a program called Samba, for using SMB. Is that going to be of any help? All pc's are Windows- one is XP and the other 2 are Vista Home.

Thanks for the help!

Samba is a Linux application that will allow you to share that hard drive on your Windows network.

Are the instructions any help? Sometimes they can be pretty useless. Without knowing make and model of the device you have.

Well, the instructions are translated from Chinese and says stuff like "This page can modify as below"

It is a Venus mini-NAS, model DS-NU100 from cyberguys.

I.E. can access the ftp site and then make it open in Windows Explorer. I would just like it to appear as a drive for my wife's ease of use without any extra steps.

Thanks

I was thinking about getting this for a client. Glad I read the feedback on NewEgg. I think I'll rethink that.

Anyway.....

It looks easy enough. It looks like in order to create a new folder, you need to click onto the SMB Server link on the left and create your users you want to connect to the box. Once you click Modify (per user), you are taken to a page where you can Create a new folder under Folder List.

Once you have your users and folder(s) setup on the box, go to one of your PC's you want to have a mapped drive, right click on My Computer --> Map network drive and type:

\\<ip-address of box>\<name of folder you created>
