Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal - Seven Mississippi airport towers could be closed by cuts
JACKSON — Automatic federal budget cuts could shut down control towers at as many as seven Mississippi airports...

The Federal Aviation Administration says that among the airports that could be affected are Greenville's Mid-Delta Regional Airport, Columbus' Golden Triangle Regional Airport, Jackson's Hawkins Field, Bay St. Louis' Stennis International Airport, Meridian's Key Field, Olive Branch Airport and Tupelo Regional Airport. They're on a list of 200 airports from which the FAA expects to select 100 towers to be closed by April 1.

150000 flights a year??? That's 410 flights each day, which sounds like an unreasonable number, except for maybe some major airports. I can't imagine any of the ones mentioned having anywhere near that amount of daily flights, even on the busiest of days.

Not sure, but FAA requires airports over a certian size/fpd have on site command/control/communications facilities be it a tower, or a trailer with radar/radios. Lighting can be controlled remotely of course vias a radio squawk. Live 24/7 assistance is only required at TRACON/ATCC facilities as far as I know considering that a lot of airports have no one in the tower from like 12 am to 6 am. (HWK, for example.) If a lot of towers do get closed, it just adds to the amount of workload on the ATCC/TRACON sites as they will have to take over control for those fields. Or they will just shut those sites down. Which can impact the economy even more, even kill some businesses. For example: Croft Metals has thier corporate jet at the McComb airport. If that field has to close, that means having to relocate thier aircraft to like Brookhaven, or possibly a close field in LA, costing even more to commute and possibly digging just a tad too much into the profit margin... See where this goes fellas? And I still have to ask: Do Touch and Go's count in the FPD totals?

Stay on Topic

I deleted several posts. This is not a political discussion, it is not a discussion about schools, it really is not a discussion about airports across the country. Unless you have a question or comment about MS the airports mentioned here, then move on. If you have some political comments to make, go to the Tavern.

OP, I edited your post to cut down the OT comments. Please consider keeping your intent tight with your original posting in the future.

Not to mentions that Hawkins is where the Army National Gaurd helos are based, so would require them moving to JAN for the folks that monitor them. Its also where the JPD helo used to be, and one of the MHP aircraft used to be there before they relocated it to JAN.

That's true, but I was wondering if the larger airports that's have more flights.
KPIB has 2 flights a day.

KPIB has ONLY 2 flights a day? No small planes, private craft, cropdusters, anything else? Must make it the most boring airport to listen to ever in that region.

It was just a question, and aware of all the traffic at KPIB, and football season there we have Jet Blue, Southwest,
Sun Country, etc. almost weekly.

I want to apologize to this forum for my "What" I posted while ago--it wasn't meant to be on this forum, I thought I was responding to one of my employees, been a long day. Also, I wasn't trying to post anything politicial earlier concerning this subject, I haven't done that nor will I, if anyone took it that way I am sorry; that wasn't the way I meant it. Thanks for bringing it to my attention...

Be safe
