The annual racing event is this weekend (March 17-18) at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront:

Here is the 8k course, which will take place on Saturday:

The marathon course, which will take place on Sunday:

The half marathon course, will also be run on Sunday:

As far as comms go: Gleaning from last years posts:
http://forums.radioreference.com/virginia-radio-discussion-forum/206848-shamrock-sportsfest.html

We should find these talk groups on the P25 system active:
VBPD: TG's 1209, 1211, 1214 & 1215
VB EMS: TG's 1321, 1322 & 1323

In case VBEMS will be using the analog system, look for them on TG's 39504, 39536 & 39568.

I also will have the NPSPAC channels on my scanner in case there's activity there.

On the amateur comms:
Saturday 146.49 simplex; 147.045 portable repeater backup. Also 446.0 simplex near start and finish lines.

Saturday 147.045 portable repeater and 446.0 near start and finish lines.

APRS will be with the lead runners on both Sunday races. WA4TCJ-15 will be with the lead marathon runner; WS9B-9 will be with the half marathon leader. Also, two vans picking up drop-outs will be aprs equipped (K4SIM-15 & WA4TCJ-9)

Right now, it looks like it will be warmer than in recent years; Could be more activity with runner drop-outs and (heaven forbid) medical emergencies.

As usual, I'll be at mile 4 on the 8k course. Though I'll be monitoring 2m, I'll be talking to NCS on UHF.

It's Saturday morning. I arrived at my station for the 8k@ 0600. I noticed that when I was typing our (ham ops) for the marathon, I said Saturday instead of Sunday. I'm sure you all figured that out.

We're actually going to stay on the repeater (147.045+) for the 8k instead of .49 simplex. Still on 446.0 for start/finish and me at mile 4.

So far, on the p25 system, emergency management 1 (1321) has had some early traffic. Was said EM 2&3 will also be used. Haven't heard anything on PD side yet.

After the lead runners passed, I can relax a little. one runner cramped up right at the start. Fifty minutes in, it's been a steady stream passing location (30th @ Atlantic). Keeping eye out for distressed runners & making sure no one knocks the clock and mile flag (which I'm responsible). Turned out to be good running weather, temps in 60's with wind blowing off the ocean. With the band playing, I had to use an earplug to listen to the public safety traffic and hold the speaker mic on my Kenwood TH-F6A to my other ear.
