The Shelby Co EDACS system is a format known as AEIGIS, which means that its users can push a button, or flip a switch on the rado and kick in AEIGIS Digital Encryption. Last time I was up there its was used rarely. AIEGIS is an very old format, and is being replaced slowly with Provoice in many agencies. Sorta like the VSELP stuff for Motorola, its being forced out and ASTRO IMBE, or ASTRO-25 taking its place.

Here is the line up of EDACS...
First Gen- GE/Erricsson EDACS Analog
Second Gen- GE/Erricsson, then GE alone EDACS Analog and AEIGIS (outdated, and soon no longer supported)
Third gen- Tyco/MA/Comm EDACS Analog
Tyco/MA/Comm EDACS Provoice - Both mixed mode, and pure provoice digital. (With or without ESK)

Motorola's line up...
Motorola Type I Analog
Motorola Type II Analog
Motorola Type IIi Hybrid
Motorola Type II ASTRO VSELP Digital (outdated and soon no longer supported)
Motorola Type II ASTRO IMBE - Both mixed mode, and dedicated digital. (Most popular Motorola flavor out there)
Motorola ASTRO-25 - Pure digital format.

I listen in on SCSD fairly often (usually overnight) and have never heard them go encrypted. If they're doing it with any frequency it must be happening during the day.

I've been monitoring the SCSO system as well. I've never any encrypted traffic in the 3 years I've listened. But I do not have all talkgroups programmed either.

Does anyone know if the SCSO and Memphis Police Dept. still plan to operate a new, jointly maintained system? A firefighter friend told me that the county was going to increase the number of SCSO radio towers so the system had proper access.

Last I heard, the Memphis-Shelby joint issue was dead, and the rumour of Memphis finally getting rid of ASTRO-VSELP and going ASTRO IMBE 3600, or ASTRO-25 had started up.. but have not heard anything else.....

I would expect that in the next few years Shlby goes Provoice, and Memphis will switch but nothing hard on iether thoery/rumor.
