Wondering if the system is a 5 or 6 channel system. The FCC license is for 6 channels but only 5 are listed in the RR Database. Also wondering what sites are being used. Thanks...

There are only five frequencies in the FCC database assigned to Shelby for the trunked system.

Possibly you were counting the number of records, which is six ... five sites, and the license for the mobile / input frequencies.

They would also, by default, have access to conventional use of the five ITAC frequencies. If they wanted to use them with a repeater, the frequency would have to be licensed and coordinated.

Occasionally, I will run across an agency that has licensed an ITAC or tac conventional channel as trunked. A hobbyist should become familiar with these frequencies, so they don't program them as part of the trunked system ... and end up not hearing anything on the frequency.

I do concure as I am well aware of these freqs...

The freq in question is 868.7250. It appears to be licensed as a trunked freq (YF). This is the 6th freq that I was inquiring about that had not been submitted as part of the Shelby system. The license is WPUC453.

868.725 is not licensed to the Shelby system. It is licensed to Cleveland County's trunked system.

The Shelby system callsign is WPJR980:
- 866.0375
- 866.5375
- 867.0375
- 867.5375
- 868.0375

Shelby has had their system in place for close to 10 years. Originally, it was licensed as one site.

The county licensed its own five frequencies for trunking a couple of years ago ... originally with 4 sites. Shelby has since modified their license to include the same 4 sites.

The speculation is that Shelby and Cleveland County would merge frequencies into one system, but no one has reported that the county frequencies are operational yet:
- 866.1500
- 866.6000
- 866.6500
- 867.2625
- 868.7250

There is no mention of the county trunked license in the RR database, which surprised me when I looked earlier this evening.

I was just in Shelby the beginning of the week, and monitored the Shelby TRS while working. Unfortunately, I didn't think to check the Cleveland Co TRS frequencies for a control channel or activity.

If all 10 frequencies have been merged together, I wouldn't have known ... I was using a BC246T (which doesn't display the frequencies) in control channel only mode.

Searay or someone in the area ... maybe you can check the Cleveland Co TRS frequencies for voice and control channel activity, and report any updates. Thanks.

Thanks for the follow-up on the Cleveland Co TRS, David.

RR shows Shelby system users as using ITAC Calling (866.0125), along with ITAC 1 (866.5125) and ITAC 2 (867.0125). Are the latter two frequencies the ones you've heard in use for talk-around ?

Cleveland Co just put up an 800 rptr at the county law enforcement building. It is a conventional repeater using the license freqs. The reason for this is that, as stated, they do not have the funds for the trunked system, and they are slowly phasing in an all digital system. The county has purchased some Motorola STX(?) walkies, the new digital versions. It is my understanding that a few sheriff supervisors will have these walkies. Should hear some interesting administrative(!) stuff on here soon. John

Besides the funding issues, a city employee mentioned to me Thursday that there are some problems with building two of the tower structures called for in the trunked system.

There is local opposition to the downtown site from members of the community, with regards to appearance and historical preservation.

This might be in limbo for awhile.

An employee at Cleveland Regional Medical Center mentioned that their communications would be moving to a trunked system, but he was unclear whether that move would be to the Shelby TRS, or a TRS funded by Carolinas Healthcare at the hospital.
