hi

i was wondering how this works(pretty new to scanning),i read you need a discriminater fitted

is there a cheap scanner i could purchase that dosent need the mod

what leads do i need?

and is the program free or anybody know of any other likewise programs

You might want to check the Yahoo group out, which is devoted to ShipPlotter. It would seem that any scanner that can hear the VHF Marine band - even an el cheapo old Uniden, GRE or Rat Shack - with a discriminator tap would do the job. I believe that AIS is sent at too high a speed to be able to be decoded correctly off a headphone or speaker output. But asking the folks on the Yahoo group should get more definitive answers.

[edit] The bottom of the ShipPlotter website lists several models and brands that can work without a separate tap. Being in the UK, though, I suspect the prices would not be particularly cheap.
