Yaesu: Shipping Box for Yaesu FT-991A

Greetings. I need to ship my Yaesu FT-991A in for repair. The Clarifier nob broke off and it appears to have what sounds like a 60hz buzz while I am transmitting. Can anyone recommend a secure shipping box to pack this in on its way to Cypress, CA?

In my experience, the UPS Store will pack your item in box with loose packing peanuts. As your package moves through various conveyors and automated package handling systems, your radio will shift around in those loose peanuts and end up at the edge of the box with no protection from outside forces.

A better approach would be to get a box that has at least 2 inches clearance from your radio on all sides. Wrap your radio in a layer of small bubble wrap. Use extra bubble wrap to make up the difference around projections like knobs and connectors. Then wrap the whole thing in a layer of large bubble wrap. When you put your radio in the box, there should still be around an inch of clearance around all sides. Cut 1" insulation board to take up that remaining space. The goal is to make sure your radio can't move inside the box. The insulation board will provide some stiffness to the corrugated paper box so that it doesn't crush as it gets handled and other boxes get stacked on top of it.

As with many things in life, shipping with one of the major package carriers needs to be an exercise in "hope for the best, but prepare for the worst".

— These are pretty much an automatic purchase for me at the same time as radio acquisition. Of a size to hold original contents plus options and spares. The whole of the XYZ Radio & misc.

Save pick/pluck foam not used. Can use Plasti-Dip to keep case foam secured (Spare foam available).

Cheap cardboard storage anywhere/anytime has no place with radio equipment, much less in shipping.

A radio seller tells me he has original shipping carton is someone who didn’t care too much.

Quite a few videos on other uses. There’s only an upside with these inexpensive cases.

The SKB or PELICAN variants are at another level.

Radio has so much accessory that a second size to ship radio alone requires a smaller case? So what?

1). Tag the transport case exterior with personal data and interior with radio data (serial#). Use zip ties in provided slots after securing hinges.

2). Tag the radio with name/contact.

3). Have shipper place in overcase.

Take photos of all this. Send in email to repair facility to ATTN: (?; get a name)

— Pay for both directions/insurance in advance.
Make it easy on repair facility.

— Hold all the strings.
