LUBBOCK Shortly after laying two slain officers to rest, Odessa police officers are having to prepare for another.
Cpl. Abel Marquez died Wednesday afternoon in Lubbock.
"We heard about it right after the funeral," Sgt. Pete Marquez said, his voice soft with grief.
Pete Marquez and his brother Cpl. Phillip Marquez were back in Odessa attending the funerals of corporals Scott Gardner and Arlie Jones Jr., who were killed in the same incident that eventually cost Abel Marquez his life.
University Medical Center's public information officer Greg Bruce confirmed the death Wednesday.
Marquez suffered four days in critical condition before succumbing to his injuries. He, Jones and Gardner responded to a domestic violence call Saturday night in western Odessa, where all three were shot in the head.
"He went to be with Scott and Arlie," he said. "He went to be with the Lord."
Cpl. Phillip Marquez, another of Abel Marquez's brothers, said the family was waiting until "a miracle or a sign" to say they "were not killing him."
Even though Abel Marquez was pronounced dead Wednesday afternoon, Phillip Marquez said he knew it was eventually going to happen.
"We were expecting it," he said. "I think we came to terms with it."
Texas Rangers Capt. Barry Caver said he was notified Wednesday afternoon that Marquez had died at 3:10 p.m.
Pete Marquez said while it was a sad day, it was better that his brother died on his own instead of the family "letting him go."
Meanwhile, District Attorney Bobby Bland said he doesn't know how soon the paper work will be filed, but he plans to charge Larry Neil White, 58, with a third count of capital murder in connection with Marquez's death.
"I heard it as I was leaving Arlie's funeral," he said. "He will be charged with a third count of capital murder. I will file to deny him bond."
White is currently charged with two counts of capital murder in connection with Gardner's and Jones' deaths. He's also charged with three counts of attempted capital murder. He's being held without bond in the Ector County Detention Center.
