I'm considering getting a bcd436 but I've heard not such great things about them. I do like all the systems it covers but people say there a lot of problems with the radio. Is there another choice? Any opinion?.

I've had mine since May 2016, no problems whatsoever. ProVoice and DMR upgrades have been great. Latest firmware has digital enhancements that worked good.

I've had mine since Dec. 2015 no problems, also have a 536 since June with no problems. Love the GPS feature.

It's a very good radio, but you take a chance that you may need to send in for repairs by Uniden at no cost. No way to know in advance.

The 436HP is a good scanner. As for other choices, you should also consider the Whistler TRX-1.
It is the main competitor to the 436.

One more thing,

Uniden has made no announcement about NXDN to this point. Whistler has announced they will release NXDN for their TRX 1 and TRX 2 radios at no additional cost, by the end of the year.

If you are interested in DMR or NXDN, these are significant points. These are additional charges from Uniden, but built into the price at Whistler.

I got mine in 2014 in may. I have yet to have any issues. I be getting another scanner next year as my County will be switching to 700mhz p25II system. Once that happens my feed scanner and spare become obsolete. I am not sure what I am getting but a second bcd436hp is not out of questions, but the home patrol 2 is also a chose and was not option when I got my bcd436hp

If you already have a 436, I'd say go for the HP2.

That is what the current front runner is. I like the screen better. There no ProVoice in my area and the DMR traffic in the area is not worth listening to. As far as I can tell that only real advantage of the 436 has over the HP2.

Agree. I also have little of interest locally on the add-on formats.

Have an HP1 and two HP2's. Have always loved the screen. It's the best, most readable screen out there. Have phase 2 in the area and the HP2, with the same audio codec or processor as the 436, does a good job.

The HP2 never having a single firmware upgrade since introduced is also good testimony to no issues.

The search and discovery options are also much better on the HP1 and HP2 than the x36 radios. And the other features of the extreme upgrade are very useable, especially for antenna orientation or selection.

If you decide to go with a Uniden HomePatrol 2, Ham Radio Outlet is having a Black Friday Special on them (until 11-28-2016) for $449.95 with FREE shipping included: UNIDEN HOMEPATROL-2 Scanners

I have both HP-2 and 436. By far the HP-2 is much more user friendly with a screen you can see especially in the car. I don't like 436 especially in car because you cannot see screen and the scanner gets off of scanning mode too easy if you pick it up or it gets jolted in car because of that lever on side. Screen on 436 is very difficult to see no matter what type of environment you are in. I am not familiar with Pro-Voice feature and understand that 436 has that feature and HP-2 doesn't. HP-2 fulfills my scanner needs. 436 has too many features I don't use and isn't user friendly.

I have both HP-2 and 436HP x 2. HP-2 is nice, but much prefer all the features of the 436HP. Also like TRX-1, but it's no 436HP, which I still consider best portable scanner after owning for almost 3 years, despite the well known issues, many which UNIDEN has addressed.
