Should I own both the Pro-96 and 296D?

I am a very satisfied Pro-96 owner. The Pro-96 is indeed a "pro" IMHO. I've been thinking about adding the Uniden 296D to my collection of gadgets. Are there any members here that own both the Pro-96 and 296D? If so, I would like to know why you own both scanners. OK, I'll be honest. I will need some good reasons to convince my wife that I need two digital scanners. :lol:

I own both and like milf said they each have a few features the other one doesn't. In my opinion, anyone serious enough about scanning should own at least two radios. A few examples:

* Need to monitor one channel specifically with one radio while scanning everything else with the other one (many times the priority feature doesn't cut it).

* Need to search a range of frequencies with one radio while regular scanning with the other. (The BC296D is a good one for this since it has 10 different ranges you can search at once)

* One radio might work better on some frequency ranges than the other in your area (due to design, IF's used, etc.) and the other one works better on others.

* No matter how quick or good one radio scans, you'll still miss out on some stuff, in other words, two is better than one! Period. :lol:

* Some guys "get" their wife a lawn mower or a chainsaw, you can "get" her a scanner.



I could go on about many "little" things to justify a second or third or even a tenth radio, however, it all comes down to one thing: money. If you can comfortably afford another radio without having to starve yourself and your family, by all means get it.

Life is short, scan hard!

Hello,

I own 4 Digital Scanners, a 250, PRO 96, the 785 and 796. You must have a back up in case one of them goes down for repair. (Like the PRO 96 in the next few weeks). That's the rational I use with my wife. However, she still calls me a "Radio Ho". :roll:

If you can afford another one, get it. You won't be disappointed.

Hmmmmmm... From where I'm sitting I can easily see *14* scanners and currently 5 of them are on. (It's a `quiet?' night, during the day I'll probably have at least a couple more on.) There have been times, fairly recently even, that I've had them *all* on! (And even then I was wishing for a few more! {VBSE GRIN!}) While it is true that one can `get by' with only a couple or so radios there *are* times when it seems that one *never* has enough. *If* you can afford, find, and find room for another radio and you want another radio then *why not* get another one? As other here have said... Not all radios are alike and they all seem to `compliment' each other because of those `differences'.

Bottom lines comes to this...if you can afford both, and you have the nearly 1000 sheckels to toss, by all means, get them both. I can't say anything...not with a BC250, a Pro 96, an Icom R7100, and Icom R10, a Drake R8, and an Icom R75. And those are just the receivers. Oh yeah, and a 796 will be joining the ranks very soon.

I'd love to get a picture but even at the widest angle I still can't get far enough back to get them all into the picture without having them disappear in among all the other stuff. Right now we are trying to be a 3 bedroom family living in a 2 bedroom house and as such anything that doesn't `belong?' in a bedroom ends up either in the livingroom or the `family?' room. Between the children and their schoolwork and my wife's quilting and making stuffed toys I just kinda `shoehorn' things in where ever I can find a place and can run an antenna lead. (The children wanted to see if we could pick up anything on HF about the Olympics this weekend and right now I've got a couple SWL receivers setup on a couple wooden `TV tray' tables in front of my wire shelf `rack' that our computers and their stuff are sitting `in' /`on' to get them down to where they could `twiddle' the knobs! 'Course that means that I have to shut down the computers depending upon just what freqs we are attempting to listen to even *with* co-ax lead in. {WAN GRIN!} I suppose that I could have just given one the ICF-2010 and the other the Satellit 800 along with headphones and sent them to their room but then I'd be constantly worrying that something would end up `dinged' or something and there would be *3* upset / disappointed people. {FROWN!} Besides... Why not use the `big rigs' which, while the other two radios aren't all that bad, can `walk circles around' the two `portables'? {GRIN!}) We're working on getting ourselves a new house built and I'm going to actually have my *own room* for my radios and other electronics. As soon as that's done I'm going *definitely* have some pictures if *only* for `insurance' purposes. (We were broken into a while back and I think the *only* reason they didn't get away with more than they did *was* because it was hard to tell just what was what. {WAN GRIN!} In light of that since I expect that things may be a bit easier to `see' I'm going to take a few `countermeasures' along with lots and lots of photos to protect my investment. {CHORTLE!} [Two things I *will* mention that I intend to do is a *good* locking setup for the door into the room and the window or windows will have plexiglass either replacing the glass or as another `layer'. {GRIN!}] )
