I've been doing some reading so I had my $500 ready to go tomorrow to buy a BCD396T then I was reading tonight that the BCD396XT comes out in a couple of weeks....damn! I was so psyched to get my new scanner. Then I thought I'll buy a 996T instead and buy the 396XT later....what would you guys do? I know it sounds silly buy I don't want to wait for the XT I want a good scanner now (I live in Northern VA.) How important are the extra features of the new scanner? NACs and all that?

Hi srd84 and welcome to RR,

You can take a look in the Uniden scanner forum here for info on the release of the new XT and the features.
It really depends on what features you will use, what frequencies you monitor etc...
You really have to make that call based on your needs, but if you are willing to wait usually a new radio release will make improvements upon the previous. I personally do not own a Uniden right now and have not read the info on the XT model so I would start there to be better informed on whats new and compare the two based on what your needs are and determine if the new features are worth the wait and price. Good luck :)

I'm in the same situation. I was all set to buy but now I think I'll wait for the XT. I'm a newbie and it's probably more scanner than I probably need for my area but I want the latest and greatest I guess. But it sure is tough to wait.

Couldn't Wait

I didn't wait. I got home a few hours ago with my new GR PSR-500 and thanks to the preprogrammed systems I am already listening to police and fire in Prince William County VA. Woo Hoo! Like the fact that this scanner has a usb cable instead of serial since I'm plugging into my laptop. I'm going back to play with my scanner now lol....btw I heard on a police admin channel officer telling dispatch to "move bravo object to delta quadrant" and "move alpha object to bravo quadrant" Any idea what this means?

My personal decision has been to wait (which is what I'm presently doing) for the 396XT. I figure that for that much money I want to get the most up to date scanner that I can. If I had concluded that the extra features were not significant to me, I'd still probably wait to look for a discount on a 396T. Since the two scanners have about the same list price, there may be savings to be had if the old model is still in stock.

Obviously, it's a personal decision with no right or wrong answer.

Folks, there may some confusion on the postings here, mainly because most of the post were from people who were moderated so answers were given and comments made that may seem out of order; just take that into consideration when looking over the comments.

Well I don't. But perhaps someone from your area might have an idea. Go the main forum index and scroll down until you find the forum for your regional area and post a question there, I am sure someone might have an idea.
