I hope I'm post this in the right place.

Here is my problem, it's only on VHF-High (118.000 - 174.000).

I can have a full 5 bars, and sounding great, like they are sitting beside me, and the it just drops out to like 1, maybe 2 bar, and sound horrible, scratchy, just not easy to listen to.

It happens on both of my radios, anyone have an idea what might cause this?

Hi Ron, are you using any outdoor antenna for the scanners? Might be a de-sense issue hmmm. Reason about the outdoor antenna is, my older antenna, had one lead from the balun break with ice over it. When the wind blew it would cut in and out. It stopped once I replaced the balun. It has to be something near, cause both your scanners get the same issue.

Sounds like a rf desense issue to me as well. Possibly from another strong rf source close to the op's location?

Yes I have that problem it seems, this is my biggest problem>> FM Query Results -- Audio Division (FCC) USA , and then next is the local repeater for NOAA.

The radio station broadcast tower is across the road, and about 500 feet up the hill.

Ronnie,
Take a look at this thread.

I went ahead & picked up the trap at a local 'Shack'. The sales clerk asked me 'what does that do? we sell quite a few of these, but I don't know why'. I ordered the connectors (adapters) from Monoprice; ordered from them before on other items.

It made a small improvement on my PSR-500, but I'm about 8 miles from the the closest transmitters. Cedar Hill, in Dallas County, is where virtually all of the TV & FM stations have their transmitters. If I'm in that city itself, pretty much any scanner has some issues. Even the alarm on a previous truck I owned couldn't be set within a mile of the tower farm- too much RFI.

That was the first filter I bought, the RadioShack FM Filter, and it didn't help.
So it seems I keep spending money on traps, now I using these 2, I no longer hear music, or the weather report, but still get the signal drop.

Below are the filters I'm using now.

HPN-30118 Combined Notch Filter

SCANNER RECEIVER NOTCH FILTER for Interference suppression adjustable NF96X1-1 Scanner Notch Filter for interference supression
