While I've logged activity on a couple of federal frequencies in Seattle since my move here in March of 2006. I don't really hear much activity at all.

I've heard activity from the DEA on 418.675,actually very interesting activity.

And

BATF on 168.00

I don't hear much from either of these agencies at all.

And aside from the U.S forest service. Things seem to be "silent in Seattle"

I thought there might be some activity on the JIWS systems,so far nothing.

Does anyone have any ideas or insight as to what's going on?

He's not the only one who has noticed the fed bands are pretty much a wasteland these days. Here they used to be jumping all the way from New York To Philadelphia, now it's deado with the exception of a bit of brief FBI chatter once in a great while. If not for the fact I have more memory slots in my scanner than I know what to do with I'd probably delete the whole bank and use it for something else. Like they say in the TV commercials "your actual mileage may vary" so let's hear from you.

Sure, they intend to build out a billion dollar radio network (JWIN) nationwide, then continue to use cellphones that the taxpayers also buy for them. After all, the nation has no current economic problems, so we might as well make the contractors and radio manufacturers rich for systems that won't get much use. But maybe I'm just cynical. . . .

What do you mean, Steve? The IWN system is hopping with traffic, it's just 99% encrypted. I dumped all my Pro96com logs yesterday after finding a bug in the system, and ran the program on the Gold Mountain site (Tower 107) for about 8 hours. Logged 29 unique talkgroups, and 140 unique radio identifiers...Off just one tower. Also got some clear traffic, specifically the ICE Seattle Office.

Remember, when scanning the IWN system with your PSR-500, it won't pass encrypted traffic, so you may not hear much of anything with just the radio.

3 days later, running Pro96com on and off for a few hours at a time, I now have 41 unique talkgroups and 195 unique radios logged. Primarily the Gold and Grass mountain sites.

The DEA's UHF frequencies are usually pretty active in major areas. They have repeaters on the same freqs/tones in multiple large cities across the US. Pretty handy pairs to keep in your radios.
