Well you have to program it somehow, you also have to make favorites list, and I think you understand that. You know if your press channel it's like hold. It will sit on a frequency or talk group. If you want to try the ZIP code method and set your range for 5 miles and make sure all of your service types are activated you can just search for a frequency or talk group that you want from the database. When you find it press Channel which will hold on it... Press enter, follow the simple prompts to put it on one of your favorites list. You can just hold on that frequency or talk group and monitor it by itself.

If you really don't want to put it on a favorites list and when you do your ZIP code database search just push Channel and hold on that one frequency or talk group and you have what you want.

If you're new to the radio, and didn't own a x36, it's a pretty steep learning curve but you will get it. A lot to read. Lots of information out there to go through and study so that you can use the Sentinel programming tool and set up favorites list and listen to more than one thing at a time.

Lots of great people here that will go into detail with you. I'm just covering the basics here so you can sit on that one frequency or talk group you're looking for. :)

For a conventional frequency:

Press the Channel hold key
With the scanner in hold mode (on the channel), enter your frequency, including the decimal point.
Once you enter the Frequency, do not press the E/Enter key.
Instead, press Channel again.

The scanner will be holding on the frequency you entered. You can use the scroll knob to manually search other frequencies.
Press Function + System to resume scanning.

For a talkgroup, press channel hold while the scanner is on the trunked system of interest
With the scanner in Channel Hold, enter the talkgroup, then press Channel (not Enter) again
You're now holding on a talkgroup in that system.

Function plus System to resume scanning.
