I am looking for a simple handheld scanner to monitor airport traffic, tower and ground control. I would like it to be digitally selectable, but do not care about all of the fancy stuff, simple and charp with great reception?

Any thoughts?

Try one of the models from Sporty's Pilot Shop (www.sportys.com). My first scanner was a JD-100 from them (discontinued). My friend also has an Icom handheld that's much smaller and seemed to have excellent VHF air reception, I don't remember the model but it'd be worth looking into.

scanner for airport

Thanks guys. A basic $99.00 scanner is all I need. I would only monitor 2-3 airports in my general area, (Harrisburg/Lancaster PA).

I purchased a Pro-97 to try out and it works really well, but perhaps has too much on it for the simple needs that I have, so I may take it back. I don't know that it buys me any better reception of the air freqs than the $99.00 model? I think the money I spent would be better used to buy some sort of antenna for home so that I can pick up the airports at a distance.

It needs to have a connection for an external antenna as well. I was in Rasio Shack the other day and they have a couple of around a hundred dollars.

Jim!
