simplex radio test

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So myself and a few members from our group did a simplex radio test to get an idea on the range of ham radios and the results were very poor. We initially started with the Nextel i355 for security and got some what ok range. And then we switched to ham radios for range and several other uses.

My plan is to get a radio tone repeater system and place that in a pelican case with a solar panel charging a lithium battery that is inside the case which everything runs on. I was going to hang this on a very high point to extend our area so we could talk up to 60-100 miles.

After this test today I have some concerns about if we will get that distance or not. The radios out group uses is the Wouxun radios and the Baofeng uv-5r. The simplex distance we got today with these radios is around 2 miles on MURS. Now granted this was with the stock antennas but I think I got more range with the Nextel i355 radio and if there was a way to put them on a repeater system I would still be using them. This test makes me hesitate about purchasing the rest of the repeater system.

Anyone else have this setup in place and are already testing it?
