Remember I am a novice and 95% of what is posted here goes right over my head.

I have a Home Patrol II which has been great (for me). Was reading about simulcast and that the HPII can’t do simulcast.

Located in Madison County, Illinois

The SDS200 might be overkill considering my skill level.

Any suggestions?

Whether or not your HP2 works on a simulcast system depends, in large part, on your location. By design, a simulcast system transmits the same information from multiple towers... simultaneously (thus the name). If the signals are digital (P25, etc), the miniscule difference in timing, created by the arrival of the signals at your location from two (or more) different towers, can "confuse" most scanners. The SDS series of scanners were specifically engineered to combat this problem. However, if your physical location is such that, for the most part, you receive signals primarily from only one tower, your HP2 might actually receive those simulcast signals well enough to be readable. Essentially, it's a roll of the dice. If the HP2 doesn't work with the simulcast at your location, one of the SDS models is likely to be the solution.

You gotta try it to find out!! Yea the HP2 is a pretty old design, the SDS series was released to handle the problems with monitoring simulcast systems. But you never know. My son finally got around to updating the DB in his HP2, set it by the window and despite being in a city on a simulcast system, tells me it works very well....with the stock antenna no less.

My hp 2 works pretty darn good here in sw Michigan…simulcast area and I can pick up 50 miles plus. Try a different location in your place. For some reason mine works much better on one arm rest on my recliner than the other….Location location locations.

I am not using the antenna that comes with the HPII rather a Tram discone about 30 feet in the air.

Should have my SDS200 in a few days.

I have searched and cannot find a working link to download Sentinel. Most everything links to the Uniden page where I can download manuals but it states nothing found under downloads.
