Sorry to double post but I think I found my permanent solution. I walked around my house with the scanner using ATT enabled, found a sweet spot with 5 bars and set up shop there in a spare bedroom. It's been 2 hours and no garble, still have ATT enabled on the stock antenna. (Thanks @tvengr for the advice)
Moral of the story, take your time and experiment. Less is more with digital, I was trying so hard to pull in a far site that was giving me problems instead of drowning it out. Also messed with the p25 adjustments which seemed to help. It could work fine tonight and not tomorrow, time will tell!
