It happened a couple of weeks ago or so, and it may happen again today. Something happened to something in the South Sound area radio system, so the normal trunking went down and the dispatchers told everyone to switch to "site trunking". After that happened, I don't hear anything until the problem is fixed and everyone switches back to normal trunking.

Like I said above, they are possibly having the same, or similar problem today, because they put out a warning that they might have to switch to "site trunking".

So, I'm wondering if anyone knows what this means and what I would/could do to still listen to the action until they switch back to normal trunking.

I primarily use my Pro-97 for scanning, but I have a Pro-43 that I can use while "site trunking" is going on, I just can't follow any conversations and don't know exactly who is talking.

You need to program all the voice freqs for that site into your scanner.
One of the draw back of just programming the control channel freqs only.
You will still hear everyone doing site trunking in conventional listening.
(Uniden HomePatrol & GRE iScan users can't do it) :(

The users on the trunked system will switch to a Failsoft Channel Assignment.

When Failsoft occurs on the user radios:
o The word “Failsoft” will alternate with your Talkgroup name in the display of your radio
o Your radio will “beep” every 10 seconds
- (Scanners user will hear it on each voice freq)

You're confusing Site Trunking and Failsoft which are two different things.

When a site loses contact with the Zone Controller, it reverts to Site Trunking. The control channel is still active so users on the site will still be able to use their regular talkgroups. They just can't talk to anybody on a different site. The newer scanners have no problem scanning when this happens.

When a site goes into Failsoft, the control channel disappears and the repeaters function as conventional repeaters. Most scanners will have a problem with this system since the repeaters are constantly transmitting.

They will lock onto the first repeater they encounter and stay there.
