ASPEN — A 30-year-old snowboard instructor reportedly died at Buttermilk ski area near Aspen on Thursday after colliding with a tree in the middle region of the mountain.
The accident occurred shortly after noon, and the snowboarder, whose name has not been released by authorities, was administered CPR by ski patroller before being loaded onto an ambulance and taken to Aspen Valley Hospital.
Pitkin County Sheriff’s Deputy Jeff Lumsden, who responded to the call for an ambulance to take the injured man to the hospital, said it took roughly 15 minutes for a snowmobile, towing a rescue sled behind it, to get down the mountain from the scene of the accident.
Lumsden also said he was told by Skico employees at the base of the mountain that witnesses said the instructor was “skiing pretty fast” when the accident occurred.
Although the name of the instructor has not been released, pending notification of next of kin, a news reporter at the base area said friends and fellow Aspen Skiing Co. employees could be seen comforting one another in Bumps restaurant.
Witnesses on a chairlift that passed over the site of the accident, and who observed the arrival of ski patrollers at the scene, said the instructor appeared to not be conscious or moving under his own power when pulled from the trees at the edge of a run.
Aspen Skiing Co. spokesman Jeff Hanle could not be reached for comment at 4 p.m., but reportedly was working on a statement concerning the accident.
