All this past week, the base radio at my "office" has been recieving Fairfax dispatchers more loudly and clearly than our dispatchers in Richmond.
I was also affiliated with the Div 5 HQ tower on my mobile from 95 at the 39...spectacular enhancements this week.

Yeah, I heard a ham repeater in MD on 147.075 here, usually Bearden which is just north of I64 at Afton Mt. Very unusual here, tropo is more common near the coast, Richmond--
east.

All this week I have been getting Prince William's VHF patch of their Fire/Rescue dispatch on 154.325 PL114.8 on and off, my software has logged over a hundred hits so far. I am in Delaware County Pennsylvania (SouthEast corner of PA) and this freq along with many other long distance skip catches are on the scanlist for my Tri-State feed at scanameric.us. It has really been a great week for monitoring, lots of new voices and locations. It's kinda cool to pick something up on the scanner then look it up or compare it to the database here then google an address to verify the location.

In the "base" radio comment above, I should note that that particular radio is part of the legacy system, not STARS yet.

Ducting has been very good lately. A few days ago I was listening to KHB38, NOAA Weather Radio out of Atlantic City, NJ at my home south of Richmond. That night I was able to receive a different transmitter on every NOAA frequency. That's the first time that's ever happened to me! Unfortunately I didn't have much time to scan the rest of the PD/FD bands.

Yep, it's definitely been going on for a bit this week. I've got an old Motorola HT600 programmed with 159.000 (CSQ) and even with a half broken antenna I thought I was hearing Richmond when it was in fact Fairfax.

I listen to Div 1 Channel 1 almost all the time, I sometimes will hear another division pop in but not too often... But I do hear Montgomery Co, Md just about every other day on Chesterfield Fire's VHF 154.160, I hear it some days very clear on my CDM1250, and on really good days I will pick it up on my portables depending where I am at in the metro area... Back when Lakeside Rescues 155.175 was up and running I would pick up Virginia Beach EMS nice and clear sometimes but since LVRS is no longer using 155.175 you dont get to hear it too often!

Ducting from Smithfield, VA to southern PA

Thursday morning a 2 meter repeater from the Philly area was 5-9 in Isle of Wight County. They have the same freq pair and PL tone as the Smithfield 147.195 machine.

You might find this site interesting in reference to "ducting"

Last night an amateur radio operator from Maryland was accessing the amateur radio repeater in Williamsburg (146.76 MHz). Good indication of ducting.

I was working a station in NJ on 2m simplex (.52) while mobile. A few minutes later on the same freq, I worked Tim KG4HOT in Nelson County. I was in Newport News and James City County at the time. A few minutes later on the Williamsburg .76, I worked former Va Beach resident Dave W2DAN in RI. I could not hear his repeater (there were WA3DZD in Jessup MD and WA4WAR in Wilson NC ducting in at the same time), but Dave and a station he was in QSO with a short distance from him in MA were both full quieting to Williamsburg.

A little later, I was able to work Tim on his 224.60 repeater on Carter's Mountain just south of Charlottesville as far out as I-64 mp 210 and heard WA3DZD's 224.76 as far south as I-95 mp 98 (Doswell Kings Dominion exit).

Well, as long as we're telling stories, I remember one summer night driving from Richmond to Nags Head listening to XL-102 for the entire trip just like it was local, the entire 4 hours.

VHF ducting is pretty fun when repeaters up and down the east coast are coming in.
