I found some interesting conversation on frequency 443.4250 today. HAM operators from all over the world were calling in and giving weather conditions for their locations. I also heard people from Florida discussing the aftermath of Hurricane Charley. I also heard a couple of guys calling from Australia, which was very interesting. There was also one gentleman who was coordinating the conversations. This guy was like a moderator of some sorts. Anyway, does anyone know what I was actually hearing. I did hear a couple of people say "Skywarn Net". I am assuming that this is a world-wide network for weather.

Sounds like you stumbled across a repeater linked to the internet using VoIP. It goes under serveral names (depending on the software) but one of the more popular is EchoLink. Basically a repeater owner will allow his repeater to be hooked into the internet allowing local guys to hold conversations with people elsewhere (world-wide) with similar setups at thier location. According to the "rules" only licensed amateurs will be allowed on the link. :)

Well,

Upon doing a search of that frequency(443.4250) It is a frequency that is used in Flordia. So what this tells me is that someone probably had it patched or was playing a recording which is legal to do in ham radio if it is emergency related.

When you were listening to this frequency was it a repeater or was it simplex?

You have me curious now

And a couple of hundred other places.

How about the K9DC repeater in Indianapolis, IN on 443.425 which is right now on EchoLink. That is probably what he heard.

Go to http://www.voipwx.net and you can listen to the hurricane net online... This is not related to Skywarn, and it is not the NHC net but connected to NHC.
