In a couple of weeks I will have a long layover at the Salt Lake City airport. I have made an ARC-396 file with the Salt Lake City system, Salt Lake County system, and UCANN Salt Lake County site along with the airport systems. Will I be able to hear these systems at the airport and are there some better UCANN sites to program that cover the airport?

Are there any good/active Ham repeaters that I would be able to hit from the airport?

Thanks!

Absolutely! You will have no problems receiving any of those systems. I carry my Pro-95, Icom IC-v8, and my MTS-2000 out there and can get all of the systems. As for local ham repeaters, use the following link: http://utahvhfs.org/rptr.html . I recommend the 146.62, 146.94, and the 147.12. The .12 is part of the "intermountain intertie."

Linn, the best systems to listen to, in my estimation, would be UCAN Salt Lake County site 03, UCAN Davis County site 02, Salt Lake City Public Safety (AC33), and the Salt Lake Airport Authority. These are all trunked Moto II SmartZone systems. Unless you are into run of the mill government housekeeping like garbage collection, building engineers, street workers, and the like, I would not bother with the Salt Lake City Services system or Salt Lake County Public Works. The system listed as Salt Lake County Public Safety is a duplicate and better covered by the UCAN site 03 I listed above.

The radio traffic I pick up on the trunked Salt Lake Airport Authority is mostly housekeeping also. Calls for battery jumps, locations of shuttle vans, runway workers, found luggage, janitorial and general repair in the facility. Although occasionally the police, fire, or medical may respond to one thing or another. These VHF frequencies for air traffic might offer better listening for the airport itself.

You should get very good reception, depending on your physical surroundings, from the airport. I am not into HAM so I cannot give you any information on that account.

I hope you have a safe trip.

Don't forget that Delta Airlines also has trunk system at the Airport. I also have programmed the baggage handlers in my scanners.
