slow scanning

I have around 50 frequencies programmed in my 246 and it takes almost 5 seconds to run through 4 channels. Is this normal? My pro95 goes through the same amount of channels in about 1 second. How do I get the 246 to scan faster?

Things to check

IMHO, two things that can commonly slow down current scanners (many of them) if they occur at once:

Check to see if the four 'slow' channels are set DCS/DPL or CT/Tone squelch. Then check to see if your squelch setting isn't a bit too low. Sometimes scanners will check to see if the correct tone/code is received when squelch is set low/open.

Try turning the squelch up alot and see if that speeds things up. If it does problem solved, and just fine tune the squelch a bit after that.

How many systems does your scanner have? Check each System to see what the System Hold Time is set to. The default is 2 seconds for each system, but if each is set to 0 seconds, scanning will be much faster. See page 64 of the printed OM for more information. I hope this points you in the right direction.

if turning the squelch up doesnt do the trick, try taking the antenna off and see if that works.

Are you talking about 50 channels all in one bank?
If it is one bank is the bank set as trunked or conventional?

I ask b/c if some of those frequencies are control channels, depending on
how your scanner is setup, that could cause delays as it monitors the controls and attempts to search for talkgroups.

The 246 doesn't have any banks. Perhaps you meant same system?

I can't think of anything else that hasn't been mentioned. I scan around 100 channels per second.
