Hello,

I will soon be purchasing two new HT radios. They are equipped with SMA antennas. I will be purchasing and trying mulitple different HT antennas. I will need to choose what base (SMA or BNC) the antennas have before ordering them. I have heard that for strength purposes its best to use a SMA male to BNC female adaptor to take the load off of the radio or SMA connector, is this true? Also would the adaptor change the band center of the antenna? Example an antenna with a band center of 146.00 Mhz is now 147mhz or 145mhz or worse when the adaptor is used.

Thanks,
Ray

It can help with strain relief and stability if the adapter is wide enough and screws down far enough to provide a ring of contact with the top of the radio like the adapter that comes with the Uniden 396 models does.

I wouldn't worry about resonance of the antenna. The connection is insulated through the adapter and not part of the antenna. It might change things a slight bit due to the added length but in a hand held environment any interaction with the radio (holding it, proximity to objects, charging cords attached, etc...)will throw the resonance off far more than an adapter will.
