• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Are there any sites which help explain the differences between the different versions of SmartNet (i.e. versions 2, 3 , 4, etc...). Motorola's site is not very helpful in that sense (it may be because they dont want to support those versions anymore). Or if there arent, if anyone could put out a simple list of the differences in each upgrade it would be most helpful.
Gracias.

I am really looking for definitions of what it means when someone is using a particular version of Smartnet ( "We are on version 3.x" or "they are on version 4.x") Something along those lines would be of greatest benefit.
Gracias

Are you sure you don't mean SmartZONE systems? I'm not aware of different numbering schemes for SmartNET systems.

versions

maybe you are talking about ver 6.00---ver 2.10 ect. these are the diff versions of the mlm(memory) that is in the radio. you have to have a certyain ver. or higher to have zones, scan, and other features. the higher the version mlm the more features can be programed into it. i do not know what the versions--features are and have not seen a list (someone should make one) wish i could help more olepro

Motorola uses "Release Numbers" to define the feature set and software that the system is opperating on.

4.x is Smartzone wth 3600 control channel
6.x is P25 with 9600 control channel.

There are lots of other differences, but these are the ones I know off the top of my head.

Other than that, basically all most of us worry about is if its a pure Type II, a Hybrid, and if its a 3600, is it using mixed mode for voice, or pure IMBE ?

Smartzone/Smartnet - i have heard them both used to mean the same thing, but yes I know they are two different things and I even get them mixed up sometimes.

Thanks for the basic differences on v4 and v6.

Do you have to follow the numbers up the line in the versions? From what I understand each version upgrade consists of fairly significant $$ and equipment. Also it seems that v4 is somewhat useless since it is not true P25 and an entity would have to do another large upgrade to get to v6 and true P25.

SmartNET and SmartZone are not sopecifically two different things.
SmartNET is the tradename for Public Safey trunking.
SmartZone is teh trade name for multi-site Smartnet.

And to expand:

Smartzone- Mutltiple Smartnet systems using smart zone controllers, usually used to cover larger areas,....

And with the new stuff comming out with Motorola ASTRO-25 technologies, you can start out with a single site, seamlessly tie it into other local single sites, or tie into small, or large trunked systems,.. and its available in everything from small single site, up to nationwide systems. Example: Move your town onto a ASTRO-25 VHF single site system, and when the State goes to a say 700, or 800 ASTRO-25 TRS, you are already set up for interop seamlessly. Pretty cool huh?

So to tie in the multiple systems on different frequencies are they using the new SSRN?

And I imagine that everyone needs to be on Astro, being on another version of SN/SZ would prevent them from participating in that regional system. Astro is not backward compatible with previous SN/SZ versions?

4.1 allows SmartNet systems to support both analog and digital without the requirement of moving to a full SmartZone system. There's no attempt to be completely compliant; it's a money thing

And you don't have to upgrade to the newest release. With phasing in and out of new hardware it requires it after a while. Outside of some older sophisticated Privacy Plus systems you won't find anyone running anything older than 3.x probably.

There was a post where someone covered version revisions and what they entailed within the forums. You may try to search for it.
